Thanks everyone for all of your very thoughtful responses, and for providing possible solutions for my pop-up/pop-under problems. It looks like I've got a bit of homework to do before I'll be able to fully resolve them.

Noscript will do the trick but as your using ad block plus i probably wouldnt as those have a history of being bitter rivals

the simplest way to stop the adds, pop ups at the start is to log in once, tick remember details and when finished close the tab but DO NOT LOG OUT

Works for me

To prevent the livejasmin popunder from opening, this is what you do:

Using Notepad, open your HOSTS file. In XP, you will find this file in C:\WINDOWS\I386.

Add this line:

10.0.0.88 livejasmin.com

Save the file.

No more livejasmin.

EDIT: Only worked temporarily, more research required.

I use vista home premium and run IE8. And it's crap. But when I log in, I get the live jasmin as well, but all I do is click the x in the top right hand corner and it disappears, I can then log in as normal. It is a bit of a bind but I don't mind it as long as it only appears outside the site and not when you are in it.

As for watching it, you get a freeview, for a few minutes and then it blanks out. If you were to close it down and leave the site, then return, you should not get a new pop up as the old one is still there.

But the most annoying one is this streammate which I find at imagevenue and other picture hosts. At one time it was, 'Continue to your image,' with a countdown. But you always saw the advert first before you were allowed to move on. Again I just click the x in the top right hand corner.

It seems as everything is becoming more expensive these days, the only way to pay for it is through adverts whether we like it or not. I think it is a necessary evil and unfortunately, we have to put up with these things.

If you are using XP then you might try;

> Start
> Control Panel
> Internet Options
> Privacy
> Turn-on Pop-Up Blocker

Why do you have to logon to VEF everytime? Just don't log off. Close the tab, close the browser and remain logged in. Seems to work for me since I've never seen this Livejasmin.

My computer provides 2 ways of translating host names to IP addresses or
IP addresses to host names:
* The /etc/hosts file, a simple ASCII file that is searched sequentially. This method was good enough until the mid 80:ie's, when the number of hosts that wanted to connect had grown.

* BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain), which is Berkeley's implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS).

Microsoft, MAC and UNIX-clones, all can use the hosts file.

The Microsoft user might find the file at this location.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\HOSTS

However, Microsoft have released many different operating systems during the years, so a search might be necessary.

To edit the hosts file use a simple text editor and not some fancy pants, since they add formating code to the file.

The syntax of the hosts file is;

IP-number Hostname Alias(es)

Example of one entry:

157.166.226.26 www.cnn.com c

There are 3 entries, separated by space, on one line. First the IP-number '157.166.226.26' and then the hostname mapped to it 'www.cnn.com' and
lastly the alias 'c' associated with the hostname.
The aliases are not necessary and is sometimes referred to as a
geek-bookmark, because when you type 'c' in your browsers address
window, it will take you to www.cnn.com.

In what order does the computer do hostname resolution? The
hosts file or the DNS.
This depends on your Operating System. If your using Microsoft it
looks like it checks the hosts file first:

Quote:
From: (the maker of NoScript)
> http://hackademix.net/:
Since your hosts file takes precedence over your DNS in domain name
resolution, you can redirect undesired domain to invalid IP addresses,
saving both bandwidth and CPU because resolved IPs are cached.
and

Quote:
From:
> http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm:
The Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host
names. This file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, then
Windows checks the Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which
enables it to override addresses in the DNS. This prevents access to
the listed sites by redirecting any connection attempts back to the
local (your) machine. Another feature of the HOSTS file is its ability
to block other applications from connecting to the Internet, providing
the entry exists.
If you are using an UNIX clone, this can be configured in the
/etc/resolv.conf file using the keyword 'lookup'.
Quote:
> From the resolv.conf manual:
lookup This keyword is used by the library routines gethostbyname(3)
and gethostbyaddr(3). It specifies which
databases should be searched, and the order to do so.

The legal space-separated values are:

bind Use the Domain Name server by querying named(8).
file Search for entries in /etc/hosts.
yp Talk to the YP system if ypbind(8) is running.

If the lookup keyword is not used in the system's resolv.conf
file then the assumed order is bind file.
Furthermore, if the system's resolv.conf file does
not exist, then the only database used is
file.
In the good old days the hosts file was used as a map of other
hosts to visit. Today it's the opposite, it's used as a list of sites
not to visit. It works by resolving the unwanted sites name
with the loopback interface IP, which is '127.0.0.1'.

Quote:
From rfc3330
127.0.0.0/8 - This block is assigned for use as the Internet host
loopback address. A datagram sent by a higher level protocol to an
address anywhere within this block should loop back inside the host.
This is ordinarily implemented using only 127.0.0.1/32 for loopback,
but no addresses within this block should ever appear on any network
anywhere [RFC1700, page 5].
The entry for an unwanted site looks like this in the hosts file.
127.0.0.1 www.spammy.info

Quote:
From rfc3330
10.0.0.0/8 - This block is set aside for use in private networks.
Its intended use is documented in RFC1918. Addresses within this
block should not appear on the public Internet.
An hosts entry with the 10.0.0.0/8 adress space will most likely yield strange and unpredictable results, especially if you have an host with that IP
inside your network.

Some suggests that instead of 127.0.0.1 one should use 255.255.255.0

Quote:
From
> http://hackademix.net/2009/07/01/
Unluckily, most information sources about this useful technique,
including the Wikipedia article above, instruct the reader to use
127.0.0.1 (the local loopback IP) as the dead-end destination, rather
than a truly invalid address such as 255.255.255.0. This is not very
smart, especially if you installed a web server on the loopback
interface (like many web developers do), because you're spamming
it with dummy requests whenever you browse an ad-laden web site.
But 127.0.0.1 is the classic and recommended for most users.

Works for me
That worked for me on my old PC (Firefox 3.0.x on W2K). On my new one (Firefox 3.5 on XP) I was constantly logged out when I closed Firefox.
Found out that the answer was in my cookie settings. I have set Firefox to accept cookies from VEF and not delete them when shutting down.
This way I stay logged in and don't get the pop-unders.
