502 and 504 Gateway errors

I'm wondering whether this is a wider issue of malcontents just attacking sites like this. BanPan's post has provided an explanation as to why PlanetSuzy and Fritchy were both down, but last week The Collective - a site I had posted on for close to nine years - sunk without trace.

Myarchives.net's downfall was the result of having an owner that did not care about their forum. When they last got hacked resulting in a huge loss of data their forum's owner had abandoned them. With most forums the Staff work for nothing, but System Admins are working people that have to be paid to physically fix/repair/restore/maintain the hardware/software a forum relies to run upon. With an absent owner nothing could be done to recover from the hack for months. So unfortunately Myarchives.net eventually slowly sank like a hulled ship with no captain.

I've got some sympathy with this idea, but for luddites like me with an ancient laptop and a mobile dongle for access, the latest version od vB is bloody awful.

I know the admins are on the case, but disabling plug ins doesn't result in outages for 12 hours a day so if it is a DDoS as is reported by the admins of PS and BF, can the notice be amended to say so?

IIRC, I think the guy who owned it was also in poor/failing health. He may have since passed on. The majority of the most active members were older than the median age here. I think in MA's case it was a combination of factors in that the owner was not technically savvy and the upgrades put into place with vB were less than successful. I think some of those updates also exposed them to vB hacks that were out there in the wild. Since they didn't require the use of image hosts, many of the files still exist there but you have to know the exact paths to everything. So your analogy of a hulled or ghost ship is very apt.

I personally feel it comes down to filehosts...doesnt this place have an "approved filehost" list ?...there have been times Ive simply clicked on a page (example...page 4 of "Sunset Thomas"....and gotten a trojan....

To keep this place secure, these animated siglines and such need to be stopped, and avatars need to go thru the site's sytem....Ive been a webmaster, admin and moderator....IMO this place is awfully lax....

Tighten down the borders a wee bit....and lay down and enforce the law.....filehosts IMO are a priority.....

Yes the Filehosts are all unscrupulous, scheming pirates who would cut your ____ without blinking. Or more precisely, they get money from pirates in exchange for (mostly) unpoliced mayhem. But if vef approved only *good* hosts, there would be no vef. No?
