Do you know who Cornelia Sharpe is? I did not. I was watching Crazy Joe (1974), and there was a scene with the mobster (some who have seen Martin Scorsese's The Irishman may remember the scene of Joe Gallo getting gunned down by Robert De Niro, which has been put up on YouTube) running into a studio film (about gangsters) being shot on a street in Little Italy, and when he is pointed out as being part of the crowd to the production team, Joey (as played by Peter Boyle) is treated by the cast and crew as royalty. An actress from the film especially dotes on Crazy Joe, which got me to wondering who the beautiful blonde may be.

Cornelia was a former fashion model (a six-footer) who probably parlayed this stage of her career with great success when she made the transition to acting, because she managed to break into the bigger Hollywood movies, beginning with Kansas City Bomber, with Raquel Welch. Her next role was as an extra in The Way We Were, but in that same year of 1973, she got a pretty prestigious part as Al Pacino's girlfriend in Serpico.

Perhaps the price she had to pay for this plum role was (luckily for us) her "nudity concession," and (again luckily for us) it would not be her last:

The hit film was the first produced by Marty Bregman (Scarface), who would make her his wife in 1981 (and she stayed with him until his death in 2018; they made a kid, Marissa Bregman, who is best known as a singer); Cornelia appeared in six films produced by Bregman, which was almost half of her entire screen output.

Her next film after Crazy Joe was the Bregman-produced Busting, with Elliott Gould and Robert Blake as two unorthodox L.A. vice squad coppers. Our lady played a call girl, and luckily she wasn't done with the nudity yet. Here's a pretty good write-up about this flick, with a good selection of photos.

I thought I knew my seventies movies, but I've never heard of Open Season (1974) where Ms. Sharpe had the starring female role; sounds like a pretty good "psycho-horror-thriller" with a great cast (including Peter Fonda and John Phillip Law). In the words of this review featuring photos: "A not so innocent couple are kidnapped by three ex-military men, hellraising weekend warriors who plan to take them up to a mountain cabin for games of degradation and humiliation. The couple are soon let go and viciously hunted down like animals by the bloodthirsty, former Vietnam vets." (You know you can't go wrong with crazy Vietnam vets.)

I'm getting the feeling we owe Bregman thanks, because in this next Bregman production, The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975), Cornelia got naked again. The film starred Michael Sarrazin as a fellow who has flashbacks to prior lives, and sounds like he meets his previous incarnation's wife. I'm also reading Margot Kidder was oddly cast as same-aged Jennifer O'Neill's mother.

Bregman was also behind The Next Man (1976, A.K.A. The Arab Conspiracy), another 70s film I'm in the dark about, even though it starred Sean Connery.

He played a Saudi diplomat who wants to make nice with Israel, inviting animosity and a lady assassin (that would be Cornelia) whom it sounds like he falls for. (Not as in fall over dead, either.)

Cover Girls (1977) was a TV movie where two fashion models (the other being sexy Jayne Kennedy) are secret agents. You have to hand it to Cornelia for getting cast in starring roles, only a few years after she began (and this one Bregman had nothing to do with).

Three years passed before Cornelia was in a film again, amounting to her biggest role ever — where she starred as a female James Bond in S.H.E: Security Hazards Expert (1980). I'm surprised I have never heard of this one, but it does appear obscure (there's a version put up on YouTube, where these screen shots came from). The bad guys are Robert Lansing and Omar Shariff (although not Bond-style supervillains), the latter falling for our lady. A bad girl is Anita Ekberg (pictured), and our heroine is up against a big henchwoman. This may have been intended as a failed TV pilot and was aired as a TV-movie. There was mild nudity, likely included for the European release. Perhaps the fact that Martin Bregman was the producer got Ms. Sharpe to peel off her duds. (If so, thanks Marty.)

A cool cast was involved with Venom (1981), among whom were Klaus Kinski and Oliver Reed (they reportedly could not stand each other), playing the accomplices of the maid (the delightful Susan George) who plans on kidnapping a boy — little suspecting a deadly snake is on the loose. Cornelia plays the kid's "loving-but-suffocating mother," and no clothes came off, even though this was a Bregman production. This was the year she got married to the big shot, changed her last name to Bregman, and kissed her screen career good-bye (save for two token returns in incidental parts some twenty years later).
