I’d hazard a guess and say for a huge majority it’s the former – as a substitute. Needless to say, regardless of how great any masturbatory material you use may be, it can never replace the real thing, and certainly after a while it will start to wear a bit thin and become tedious and boring.

Some would say it is, particularly the more reserved members of the community. I would say porn has to be some kind of sexual act, even oral sex. Just someone on their own, even stripping off completely, is not porn. But basically, anything from a woman topless onwards, is porn(ographic) to some.

Yes. I agree with that advice 100%.
Virtually every post in this old thread refers to content, and while I completely agree that the devolution of quality content is a huge concern (it's gotten to where I can't even watch 98% of what's out there), an even bigger problem for me is something known as habituation. Personally, I've spent way too much time with videos that I really like (yes, there are still a few out there, but they're not easy to find), so much so that even those videos are nowhere near as exciting to me as they once were. That's habituation. I've resolved to take a full two weeks, and then return to the videos that I love. I can be 'master of my domain' for two weeks. You are right JM61. If you break down the word pornography, porn means nudity and graphy means to make and image, like radiography, an x-ray, photography, a picture. If a picture is taken of a person whom is naked it is pornography.

It's easier to become bored with porn when it's available, on demand virtually 24/7. It's like having subscriptions to a number of streaming platforms (HULU, Netflix, Prime, Disney+, Paramount, etc) and not being able to decide on a single thing to watch. So instead, one goes to bed.

The anticipation of having to go to the back room of a video rental store or reaching for a dirty magazine at a news stand, with the fear of being judged or discovered.
There was effort involved, which resulted in heightened excitement and payoff.
All that said, my periodically added to 10TB hard drive can attest to either a LACK of boredom or an addiction run rampant.
Can't imagine ever fully disconnecting from my love affair with porn.

I've experienced this at times as well.

We have so much content at our fingertips now, it has transformed how we consume, and most certainly transformed our attention spans.

This happened to me with video games as well. When you have 30 games downloaded, and a Steam app. where you can buy and download a virtually endless variety of games, you begin to abandon games only partially finished, always in search of something new. I've kind of successfully battled against this by playing a select group of games indefinitely, my favorites basically. This has enabled me to enjoy playing video games much more.

With porn it's more complicated.

I currently have about 2 TB's of porn on my PC, some on the internal drive and also more on an external drive.

I even experimented last year. I bought a stack of porn magazines from a local store and I tried to do an edging session with them. I found the magazines so limiting and confining, I had flipped through about eight of them in just a couple minutes and was wanting to go back to the PC and my vast porn archives.

In the old days back in the early 80s, my little stack of porn could last me a couple years if need be. My attention span was much larger.

And I have found in recent years that reading actual books became more difficult. I love history and fantasy, and in my 20s and 30s I read hundreds of books. Then when the internet hit in the early 2000s, I slowly began to realize that I was reading less and less in terms of physical books, and was getting more information from a computer screen or a cell phone.

I had to literally practice going back to actual physical books and force myself to stay engaged.

It's amazing how much technology has changed us.

Technology had changed the way we consume information and entertainment. Things like video games, which were once an intense hobby can get stale. One can only watch a movie, read a book or listen to an album so many times before it gets boring. The first time you see it is the best then with each viewing the joy lessens.
I have seen what I was interested in when it comes to adult entertainment. I've looked at the pics of the models I like and have seen the films I was interested in. It doesn't excite me the way it used to. Not sure why it just doesn't.
