Win XP

I use Irfanview ( Freeware ) for many Jobs. It's possible to run the Programm and control it with a Remote-Mode for many Actions from Basic via ini-File ( create Thumbs, resize/resample, crop, copy/paste into a Pic, etc ... ).

Batch Scanning ( Multiple scanning without leaving Scan Settings like ScanGear )

Just define the Pattern,Output-Path and Format for your Files ... ok starts your Scan-Driver

Batch Conversion / Rename to convert / rename selected Files

Rename : Select a Filepattern to rename all Files with it.

Conversion : Selected Fileoptions are done during the Batch ( i.e. Compressing JPGs )

Conversion - Advanced Options : Many powerful Options to modify your Files during the Batch-Run

A Conversion like this is uselful if you save big sized BMPs or TIFFs. You are able to sample them all down to JPGs with a included Resample or color manipulation.

It's a Freeware with many powerful Options.

I've been using ACDSee (browsing, scanning and basic editing) and Corel Photopaint (more detailed editing) for a couple of years now.

Never really got into Photoshop; for a number of years I used a program called Micrografx for all editing tasks, but they were subsequently bought by Corel, and a number of the features ported into Photopaint. I like the fact that PP has a simple to use "stitch" function, for joining multiple images, or parts of a larger image together.

At the end of the day though, it's all about what gets the job done easiest I suppose

Default Good little program

One I use a lot for simple tasks (eg resizing) is Photophiltre. Download is only 1.6Mb, it boots in about 1 second (!) and is surprisingly clever for such a diminutive program. For example, easy to use clone-stamp tool and batch processing. Oh, and it's freeware and is updated occasionally. Try it here:

Default program for cross hatch/moire removal

There was a program I recalled using for removing cross hatching/moire patterns from scans. It was quite good but for the life of me I can't remember the name now. It had different options for different scanners as the moire patterns were attuned to each model. Anybody remember the name of this package?

Screencapping. For a "regular" DVD I use InterVideo's WinDVD 7 (an older version but it works so no reason to upgrade to a more restrictive version) for the initial captures, saving the files as BMPs. Then I use ReaConverter to edit them (usually just brightening them and sharpening them slightly), add my watermark and caption, and rename the files while converting them to JPGs in batch runs.

Blu-Ray discs I use TotalMedia Theatre with AnyDVD to enable the frame capture function. The rest of the process is the same as above.

I can reup screencaps, other material might have been lost.

I use the same as Xxphd does... ArcSoft Photo Studio v4 for Mac. It's simple and pretty flexible, and doesn't cost what the Adobe products do.

Been using Serif products for 20 years: Pics, Movies, DTP, never had a problem yet. Had a few good nights-out with the money I've saved by not using high-end.

I use the photopaint application of Ability office 2001 for cropping, curves/brightness/contrast/saturation and 'smart blur' then I save the image and open it in micrografx picture publisher 8 for sizing/sharp/'smooth brushes' (actually a de-focus thing)/cloning/painting. Rotation can be done in either one. I got both free with magazines years ago.

For professionals such as myself, Photoshop is the industry standard. The non-pro should use Photoshop Elements. If you use something else and it works for you and what you need to do, stay with it.
