Welcome back, rc_riddle. You make an interesting point here. And I think you're right--if we can measure it we can describe it. The next step looks scary though . If we can describe something do we understand it or is this an illusion we create for ourselves? *I* think our consciousness sets us up for a trap because our brains are so good at finding patterns and using tools to find more patterns. The trap seems to be a simple illusion: "Because we can describe it, we understand it." A few examples: (philosophy) if we see a dog chasing a rabbit we tend to think that "the rabbit causes the dog " just because it came first (of course they had nothing to do with each other until they met); (science & calculus) we can describe the the probability of a single electron afterward but while it is happening if we know where the electron is now we can't *also* know its velocity (Heisenberg Uncertainty Priciple); and (everyday life) we have only 26 letters and a couple handfuls of punctuation and grammar rules for a language (English) but we all know we are fooling ourselves when we say we actually "understand" it . "Throw the bull over the fence some hay," is a common sentence form in English but we all know bulls are really heavy. So, everyone, if we can describe it do we understand it or is this an illusion we create for ourselves? e.d. |

OK, let me get thinking and I'll come back to you with a proper answer - if I can ! This thread reminds me of a quote from Douglas Adams: "There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened." Last edited by Jeff Vader; March 4th, 2010 at 02:32 PM.. |

The answer to all questions.....
Quantum Physics.. Nothing really excists if not believing in it. We are all connected, the physical universe is essential not physical..!!! Time and space are just constructs of this non materialness. For example: The native indians never saw a ship before, at the time Columbus discovered America. They did not see the ships appearing at the horizon, because they did not know of the existence of ships. What they did see were the wrinkles on the water surface caused by the ships. They only noticed the things in their natural habitat. Here's an introducton to a number of short movies explaining how the universe really works. A whole new approach to science and church... Isn't it entirely possible that most of what is "out there" actually isn't there at all?
When you see a picture of suns colliding or a super nova or some other phenomenon the distance is always so great as to seem unreal. For example NASA may give a distance of one million light years to an object. Doesn't that mean the object was in that position before the rise of mammals on this planet? It's my understanding that traveling at the speed of light for one year causes one hundred years to pass for those on the ground. Would that translate to hundreds of millions of years for something one million light years away? So if we could somehow get to that object wouldn't the event have happened and be over? Any thoughts?

When we view distant objects, we're basically looking back in time. If something is 100 light years away, we see it as it was 100 years ago. Even when you look at the moon, you see it as it was about 1.3 seconds ago! |
