Call it what you will.
When I am forced to pay the state out of my income, I call it "tax", because that's what it is.
I guess you could call it a fine, if you wanted to.

noun
1. a compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers' income and business profits or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions.

Why must you always try to obfuscate things?

Koch Bros and Union Carbide, etc, have no armed departments to get money.
The state does.

Actually, Union Carbide, IBM, Boeing, etc make money by delivering products to market.
The state does not.

You don't seem to know what coerce means.
Re your leg Vannax:
  1. How much is it worth to you to have your leg?
  2. How much would you cost to the rest of the community as a disabled person needing physiotherapy, prostetic/artificial leg and so forth?
Saving your leg is cost-effective as well as humane: $500,000 dollars worth easily.

As for obfuscating the issues I would argue that you like to dangerously oversimplify and advocate "solutions" without considering the side effects. The libertarian schtick is to want to party on down and be a nuisance to the neighbours, then do a flit and leave the landlord to clean up the mess and pay for the damage.

I guess we shall just have to agree to differ on public healthcare

We're generally happy with what we've got and we'll have to let vannax find his own path.

It's not exactly "something noticeable this week" so perhaps we need a new topic. But I would just add one thing I noticed during the "Obamacare" era in the U.S.

The discussion seemed sometimes to suggest that healthcare in U.K. and Europe was entirely publically owned - which is not true. You can go private if you wish - always could. I have had two hernias fixed at my own expense. But, speaking as a higher rate tax payer for most of my life, I have no problem with other people having the same op within the NHS system.

Thanks for a lively discussion as ever vannax.

Make all the disparaging libels against libertarians you like; You are still advocating that a man be coerced to labour on behalf of another, ie slavery. Period.

I think we all need solidarity, but the first thing to teach should be :

It is not about the ban, it is because he breached Parliamentary procedure by making it public, he is not allowed to introduce his own agenda, and this is Bercow looking to his retirement, he is about as principled as a piranha in a carp pond!
