At the risk of igniting a massive backlash . . . I think red light cameras and "speed on green" cameras are a good thing; and those who complain about them are being a bit hypocritical.
Think about it . . . most of us are risk takers to some degree. Many of us enjoy a good wager; unless the odds really favor the "house". We willingly buy lottery tickets (in spite of the astronomical odds against winning) yet we don't complain when our wager is lost. Playing the "traffic lottery" is also a risk / reward proposition. We get to run yellow lights, and/or blast through green lights at well over the posted speed limit, and in most instances we win . . . there is no consequence. But once in a while we get caught, and have to pay-up. So why complain . . . just play the game and enjoy the thrill! On the other hand, once in a while we end up t-boning some poor soul, or being t-boned ourselves. Unless we are willing to accept the costs that come with that, maybe we shouldn't play the game. God knows few of us would be willing to step up and willingly say "I did this, and I accept full responsibility". As far as I'm concerned, there should be a camera at every major intersection, and others in every school zone & playground zone. Just say'n . . . |

Maybe 10 years ago I was visiting a friend when another friend showed up. After a bit he needed to check his mail through his webpage (he owned a small company) but was having problems. Since I'm the usual goto person for this type of stuff I volunteered to help. He was using IE so I suggested he change to Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript. He agreed so I installed them and started showing him how to use them. As a part of the training we went to his personal website to make sure he could access his account. When we got there I was showing him the NoScript bar at the bottom of the window and he had two scripts trying to be run. He knew about the one script but not the other. He then called his web master and asked about the second script. The web master knew nothing about it either. Turns out the second script was trying to inject some malware into every visitor to his webpage. Whoever put the script in figured out a way around the web masters security (which was, apparently, pretty lax). So you're right, any web page can contain malware. Even a small one that almost nobody uses. |

Our foreign members should get a kick out of this.
One of the most annoying things in my adult life is the METRICSYSTEM. Nowadays children who attend elementary or grammar school learn the basics of reading , writing, arithmetic, computers, and now this annoying metric system. When I was in elementary school 55 years ago I never heard of the metric system, and it was never even mentioned until I was at college in my Physics class ( my most hated course ). The metric system has to be used in Physics because it is used in the math equations that define the principles. Now more and more in the U.S. metric equivalents are used. When I was young, people used, say for distance; the inch, the foot, the yard, and the mile, not this annoying centimeter, meter and kilometer. My car has a gas tank capacity of 19 gallons ( metric equivalent is 76 liters ). I can imagine 19 gallons. I cannot imagine 76 liters. And for temperature I always liked Fahrenheit, not that annoying Celsius, or as some people call it Centigrade. 0 degrees Celsius=32 degrees Fahrenheit. This never made sense to me. I know that there are two equations which can convert F to C, or C to F. 50 or 100 years from now everything in the U.S. will be metric. I am glad I won't be alive to see that. That annoying METRIC SYSTEM. |

Stones, gallons, inches, shillings, and so on, you have to remember alot of different terms and the relationship with eachother. 1 bottle of milk is 1 liter (well, usually the standard bottles are). 1 liter water is 1 kilogram. etc. As for Fahrenheit, i'll admit it has the cooler name, but Celsius is just a lot better. Water freezes? Zero! Easy! Edit: by the way, what term do you use to devide inches? (your millimeters, so to speak) Edit 2: i converted 2 millimeter online and got this: 2mm= 05⁄64in ... what? |
