This is the Arie Crown Forest Preserve hiking trail in Countryside, Illinois. The surface of this trail is dirt or as the county likes to call it "packed earth". The trail consists of two closely intersecting loops. Though the preserve is only 93 acres in size one can easily get lost, unless you have a map of the trail with you. When I first hiked the trail back in 1998 it took me several hours to hike it, because there are so many twists and turns. The path as you can see is very narrow and there are thick trees and this nasty thorny shrub called Buckthorn that grows right up to the path. I found out several years later that due to many letters sent into the County Forest Preserve offices the forest preserve people put in at all intersections "you are here" maps on metal poles. It is now very easy to traverse this thickly wooded trail. Last edited by trailmaster; July 18th, 2017 at 07:23 PM.. |

Illinois is blessed with over 500 hiking and biking trails. They are in forest preserves, rural areas, prairies, wetlands, municipal areas, and in more than 100 State Parks. The map and photos above are from Kankakee River State Park in Bourbonnais, Illinois. If you look closely at the map you can see the Kankakee River in the middle. On either side of the river are two 16 mile trails. The one on the southern side of the river is a hiking/biking trail. The trail on the northern side of the river is a 16 mile dirt horse trail which can also be used by hikers. The fantastic thing about the bike trail is that it goes uphill all the way. Cyclers like that because it requires more energy to bike up an incline. The trail goes along the river, many campgrounds, picnic shelters, and other park facilities. Not seen in these photos are three smaller trails that can be accessed separately before one gets to the main entrance to the State Park. These smaller one mile trails go through deep woods, and wetlands. Last edited by trailmaster; July 18th, 2017 at 07:07 PM.. |
