It was always my understanding that the major difference between soft and hard core is that soft core is obviously less/non-explicit than hard core. In simpler terms, soft core is basically an "R-rated version" of hard core.

Soft core films are/can be basically shot and filmed much like hard core films, and during shooting and production there was/may have been actual penetration and oral sex occurring. Either through strategically placed camera angles/shots the explicit scenes are "camouflaged" and hidden from the audience's view, or the explicit scenes were later removed during the final editing process.

Over the years I have viewed a number of soft core versions of a hard core film, and a number of R-rated versions of an X-rated film. Both versions ran identical up until it came to the explicit sex scenes. Generally, films which are available in two versions, hard core and soft core and X-rated and R-rated, the absence of explicit scenes is accomplished through editing.
Then there are also those soft core films which do have actual penetration/oral sex occurring during filming and production, but which utilize the strategically placed camera method throughout the entire filming and production process to "hide" those explicit scenes. Despite the audience being fully aware and knowing damn well what is going on, it is the visible or non-visible explicitness of the film which gives it its soft or hard core classification.

On occasion, the film editor will accidentally, or sometimes I believe purposefully leave in a number of explicit frames in the film for added "spice", and the audience will get an unexpected delightful second or two glimpse of explicitness.

Can, or would anyone else please care to elaborate further on this subject?

I worked as a production assistant (i.e. slave) on a few softcore movies. I know that in the 70s and into the 80s, things were different, but today softcore movies are shot softcore. Many of the girls wear giant band-aids over their vaginas, which serves two purposes—nothing can enter it, and the director can't show it. Anyway, the director said, "Uh, we won't be needing any of that today." It was quite funny. The entire crew laughed, and so did she. The director did have the footage, but it was useless. He was contracted to produce a softcore flick and sneaking in that footage would have violated the contract.

Bruce Dern later retracted that statement. The retraction was covered in Playboy ... maybe in the November, 1981 issue in the Sex in Cinema article (this would be in the actual article and not the photo captions).
