Ransomware is scareware apart from cryptocker which is still a very real threat
if you dont backup offline

Using a script blocker will stop 100% of them

Chrome uses

ScriptSafe: This add-on will block nearly all scripts, and other possibly dangerous content, from executing. This means that even if you stumble onto a dangerous site you cannot be attacked unless you manually add the scripts on that site to your whitelist. Thus you are protected from harmful scripts and many privacy threats. However, many sites use these scripts, and plugins, for legitimate purposes. Thus these sites will not work correctly unless you manually add the scripts on that site to your whitelist. This extension makes this relatively easy to do. Also, under the options you should select ‘Antisocial Mode’. Using ScriptSafe takes some getting used to, but if you are serious about staying safe online then this add-on is a must have.

It's nothing new and nothing to do with those individual posts.
I've just opened the images myself with no issues.
I've got my Norton up to date and every now and again I get a pop up saying a ransomware file has been detected and binned but still an odd one gets through maybe a couple a year. If it does then just Ctrl Alt Del to get the task manager working and shut the browser down.

We are aware of it in several different forms, see here

When I clicked on the thumbnails, as per usual I went off by a link to a different site, imagevenue.com in this case, and all of a sudden WHAM, my first ever up close and personal experience with Ransomware.

Got a totally whacked out scare page saying words to the effect that my browser had been locked up by the FBI!!! and could only be unlocked by sending a money packet.

Sure enough, all on-screen commands on my browser appeared to have have been disabled. I used control-alt-delete to open task manager, that keyboard command still worked, and from there I closed Chrome and was very thankful it worked. Got me back to normal and so far no lasting ill effects noted on my computer.

Then this morning I looked at the New York times and there is a story about Ransomware and its recent spread to Android devices. Frankly I had never heard the term before, but the article indicates it started five years ago on PCs, most of it coming out of eastern European gangs.

Here is a link to the NYT Ransomware article:

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/0...s&nlid=2924197

A quote in the article says "Don't freak out" if you are hit with Ransomware, but I certainly think that people on VEF need to know about it.
I experienced the same thing while browsing 'Traditional Striptease' -post #1089, only this scare page stated that my browser had been locked by the police and I would have to pay £100 fine before it could be unlocked. I had to turn my computer off to escape the block. I then ran a full system scan on Norton and this revealed that my computer had been attacked and Norton had now resolved it.
