Alot of the T&A and bikini contests of the 1980's are unlikely to ever be released on DVD. FOXY BOXING, GELLORAMA, FOXY FOOD FIGHT, ETC.
Question: did anybody ever hear of a PPV event that aired from Philadelphia (live) in late-1993 or early-1994 ? I am not sure of the nature of the event but it had a bunch of bikini beauties, centerfolds, etc. I was at a party where Penthouse Pet Ginger Miller was talking about how she would be on this event. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to ask her what was the date or nature of the event (this was NOT the infamous Howard Stern PPV -- she told me she had been asked to do that and declined; too raunchy). Might have been a bikini contest or some T&A event, moderate or no nudity, not sure. |

Alot of these bikini contests from the 1980's and '90's show up on Ebay from time-to-time. I have seen them and sometimes the bids are quite low and reasonable.
Does anybody know if the girls were/are generally paid for their appearances or get a guaranteed minimum for appearing ? I know the winners and runner-ups get a nice cash prize but I was wondering about all the contestants. I would think that might be the case, esp. with the larger productions being taped which have commercial monies at stake. The reason I ask is that years ago when I met Ginger Miller she told me that her appearance in California Girl Bikini Contest #5 was a 'disaster' -- she got there late, problems with makeup, etc. She told me that she did it because they paid her, she was under contract (she was also in CGBC #3). This was most likely BEFORE she was in Penthouse so she wasn't a 'name' attraction yet (though it's possible she had done the layout and knew it would be out in a few months so maybe the contest organizers knew that and gave her special $$$ considerations). Some of those women would appear in dozens of contests a year -- for them, it was a 2nd job or a chance to attract modeling/acting attention. |

Compensation
The compensatory schemes for participants in bikini contests are as varied as the styles of bikinis they wore.
I used to shoot bikini contests in California and at one point sponsored them. In the vast majority of 1980s contests held in bars and the like the girls showed up and didn't receive any money unless they won or got one of the runner-up prizes. They usually were allowed a free drink or two, which was a whole other issue since not all of them were over 21. If there is a production crew actually filming or taping the event, then it is very likely there was a fee paid to each participant since that is the securest method of guaranteeing the viability of a model release. Model releases usually stipulate that the person signing the release received some kind of "just compensation" for their "releasing" the rights to use their image. But this amount could easily be something as low as $25, or even lower. Some of these video productions aren't "real" contests but instead staged events, played to a crowd of invitation-only friends of the producers etc. Others are just documenting a "real" contest that would have occurred whether there was a video being made or not. We used to refer to the regular contestants as "circuit girls" because wherever there would be a contest they'd usually show up. Some of the "names" in this group could pretty much count on placing somewhere in the top three, getting some prize money, and thus it was worth it to them to participate whenever and wherever there was a contest on. These same girls were of a caliber that they could sometimes make the leap to other forms of entertainment, like "car wash bikini girl" movies and the like. |

Yes, Harry I agree...for a T&A production like GELLORAMA I actually have seen the invitation-only ticket for people invited to the Whiskey-A-Go-GO to see the event.
I was in contact with Heather Kennedy years ago and she told me that she knew most of the girls at alot of the contests she appeared in....no "Oh wow, I didn't know you'd be here" stares or the like. Like you said, it was almost like a circuit. I think the girls back in the 1980's and early-1990's had alot more class; they seemed to have sexier (but not brazen) swimwear, good dance/strip routines, and good choices of music. The VHS revolution was JUST STARTING in the early-1980's or I think more of the contests would have been professionally videotaped. I have a compilation of dozens of contests called "Mile-A-Minute-Bikinis" and its mostly amateur handheld VHS cams and little or no sound, like if one of us were taping a contest. I don't think the most people thought the (minimal) cost of shooting/taping the shows would be worth it, though the VHS rights alone -- forget DVDs -- would have been gold. I think once the video rental stores purchased a few of these, it became alot more common that you could sell a few thousand all at once to a single chain of VHS stores. WILD BIKINIS (won by Becky Mullen) for instance, isn't even the 1st contest with that name, it had a predecessor a year earlier won by Ginger Miller, pre-Penthouse I think. But they never taped that contest so when the company released WILD BIKINIS they added footage of Ginger to the video so they could say she 'starred' in the contest even though she's not in the contest. Her scenes (with Becky) are poolside on a totally different date from the bikini contest. I have also never seen any footage of the MISS COPPERTONE contests in California (which I do not believe were done in conjunction with the company that owned the product, though maybe a local distributore). That's another contest that was won by Ginger Miller one year and Becky Mullen the next (they were good friends at the time Becky told me). |

An upconverting or Blu-Ray player would also improve the playback on even mediocre quality DVD's....it won't be as if the event were originally shot with a digital camera or a hi-def/blu-ray system, but you should notice the difference, esp. on a big-screen HDTV. Poor quality tapes really break down on big-screen TV's. |

Hi. Does anyone have a link or even info on bikini contests featuring Blondi/Blondie Bee?
I know she did at least one of the Bert Rhine "Lets Party" tapes. I've done a search to no avail and have looked through a lot of this thread. Apologies if I've missed a post. Last edited by blondifan; January 4th, 2010 at 05:32 AM.. |
