His son is talk-show host Maury Povich and his daughter-in-law is Connie Chung.

Povich wrote for the Washington Post from 1923 until his death in 1998. He once described the Washington NFL team, then run by the bigoted George Preston Marshall, thusly: "The Redskins team colors are burgundy, gold and Caucasian."
