I think the book is interesting. It tells me a lot about Lennon I didn´t know before. Best of all perhaps, it doesn´t make him into a rock´n roll or pop god by any means but totally exposes his more ugly sides too.
Link to RollingStone review about the Albert Goldman book.

A fun book on the Beatles is A Hard Day's Write by Steven Turner (MJF Books)(1994)). Nothing but quick, interesting stories that give the history/inspiration behind each Beatles song.

I was very disappointed by that book - very little new information or critical insight.
Not a patch on Revolution in the Head or any or Mark Lewisohn's books.

Just your opinion ?

Blimey ! that was fast.... the post I was alluding to has been removed.

Back to Goldman...... he claimed in his breakthrough book, that Lenny Bruce had gay relationships. Bruce's wife, who had basically mentored Goodman into numerous jazz/showbiz/circles was outraged, as were most of Bruce's friends - who cut him off.

Goldman, then, was a part-time teacher, with 'posh-titles' earning little but befriended by Bruce's wife and eased into the NY scene of radical, post-Kerouac chic. He claimed Bruce was bi-sexual at the least and homosexual mainly. Years after he moved on.

Then Elvis his next bestseller, and unfortunately a book I paid for...ugh!

Who, according to Goldman, not only took drugs like Bruce but was also a homosexual..... these "drugs" were mainly pot, but still "drugs" to Goldman....and his self-proclaimed years of research... provided no evidence, nor any quotes, anonymous or otherwise.

On Lennon, we're back to his two fixations.

Like Lenny and Elvis ~ John Lennon was another drug using homosexual
~ according to Goldman.

Yes I've read all 3 of these books. I bought one unfortunately, but I'm an Elvis-nerd.

None of Goldman's books were ever published whilst the subjects were alive.

BUT.... with Goldman dying a year after his last book ~ "The Lives of John Lennon" was published, I can understand how Yoko, in 2001, bit her lips... the most vilified woman in celebrity literature ~ imo ~ by Goldman

Anyone who regards Goldman as being a man of integrity / essence / honesty... can meet me at dawn...... with a chess set
