Yeah, I've got a bitch to scratch. I'd like to upload an image for an avatar, profile, or signature pic, but although I've reduced it to the teeny tiny dimensional size limit, the file size still exceeds the max size allowed(e.g. 10k). Is that still really necessary?


I mean, I get it. If you don't limit sizes, they get large enough to interfere with the perspective relative to a post's content. And I also understand storage space is limited, given the several thousand users on this site. But I repeatedly bump up against the file size limit(making it impossible to upload anything of quality), even though I conform to the dimension requirements. I've tried reducing color, gamma, contrast; everything short of making it so small it's basically unviewable.


I also understand that long-term members with post counts in the thousands attain a certain amount of privilege to exceed these onerous restrictions. I'm not asking for special treatment. I just want to make it a little more reasonable to tailor my profile in order to express my VEF personality. I'm not a prolific poster, and probably never will achieve such greatness. But for long-time members, who've made honorable contributions to this wonderful place, is this such an unreasonable request?

All sizes are a pain starting from a large full image

I stopped trying with full images and took smaller specific screenshots of the best part

Put it through this simple site and never had an issue with size again

The small sized avatar is still bugging me but i was reassured that someday i will have the ability to use a larger sized avatar. I keep an eye out for any sign of that happening, the position of the moon doesn't seem to be the key, maybe there needs to be an offering or a song?

I had the same problem months ago! I gave up! The avatar/pic was getting too small to be worth anything.

I thought maybe I could just start with the eye of the person/pic I wanted to use and maybe down the line when I am allowed a larger image I could just keep expanding my avatar for a "big reveal".

A little patience and preparation will help sort out the confusion. Fortunately, the forum software is programmed to determine your "Member Status/Rank", and then tell you what your limitations are. There are two different picture possibilities, and the size limitations are different for each of them.

Your Avatar:



Go to the User Control Panel, and click on the "Edit Avatar" tab to reveal the screen. Notice that the image pixel size limit, and the image byte-size limit are both shown at the bottom of the panel. Once again, go to the User Control Panel, but this time click on the Edit Profile Picture tab. The screen will be revealed, and you will see the image size limits posted at the bottom of the panel. As before, any image that you try to upload must comply with both the pixel-size, and file-size limits



The challenge for most of us is to "dumb-down" our choice of image so the the forum software will accept it.

Most modern-day HD photos are simply too big (in all respects) to serve as VEF avatars, etc unless you use photo-editing software to crop them, then re-size (scale) them down to the desired size. That is usually the easy part . . . but will likely leave you with a suitably small image that is still over 20 Kb.

The next step is to degrade the quality of the saved image so that the file-size is reduced to the appropriate level. It can be quite disappointing to see your avatar's quality erode, but there is not much that can be done about it . . . . our VEF software is pretty old . . . . dating back to the turn of the century when most "source" images were not HD quality.

There are lots on on-line photo-editors that can do this for you. I have used BeFunky to get my file-size down to acceptable limits.

Once I have images that will work at VEF, I save them to a reliable file host for future retrieval.

For my tenpenneth... As I very nearly commented in a previous thread of this issue....

I think the rest of the members here, and the admin/mods; are rather more interested in the quality of your posts than the problems you may have with a small avatar than you might like? I've never had an issue even from the very outset, in finding a suitable image & tailoring it to size dependant on my allowance at the time. I think it's right that members who've not only contributed over a longer period &/or with quality posts should get a larger image allowance.

Furthermore, I think that signatures should also be limited for those who've yet to prove themselves worthy of larger ones, or animated ones.... but that's just my opinion. opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

I tried that, but it didn't meet the file size limit either. I use IrfanView, which I think is better at it than that site. Thanks for the suggestion, all the same.

I saw your thread(sorry, maybe should have posted a linky to it). But I'd love to have your problem. I'm not asking for anything so generous, just remove the file size limit while still maintaining the dimensional requirements. BTW, how were you able to upload images of that size(as a senior member)? I'm not above bribery, but I think Paypal has a minimum amount.


So my request still stands. Can we remove the file size limit as long the the dimensional requirements are met?

An avatar and a signature are elements on a forum what often shows what the member is interested in, displaying humour or in some cases even signs of intellect. In most cases it forms an identity in which members recognize each other. The newer members often display no avatar even after being a member for a while, there are also long time members who bare no avatar probably because they gave up after many attempts to figure out the filesize. To me it is silly to think in terms of who has the larger e-cock allowing them a larger avatar because that forum member has been here for years and another has not.

Like the word signature is self-explanatory really, it is a signature to one's post, why would this be a feature only for long term forum members? Why kill self-expression in an open and friendly forum?

There are plenty of members who hardly post because they are only interested in one or very few models, they still have the same rights. Who determines what a quality post is, how do you keep score?! The main goal on this forum should be contributing, large or small it is good either way.
