Default Joining files with HJSplit

I use HJSPlit to join avi files together however sometimes I don't get the desired results. If the files that I donload have the same name (i.e. abcd.avi or abcd.mpg) and they have the ending of .001, .002, .003, etc then HJSplit works okay however if I try to add a series of other .avi files which don't have the .001, .002, etc endings then I have problems.

What I'm doing is making sure that each file starts with the same name and then I'm adding the end myself i.e. abcd.avi.001, abcd.avi.002, abcd.avi.003. The end result I'm getting is ..... abcd.avi and the file size is correct for all the files added together however when I run the file I'm only getting the first avi part and the clip stops at the end of the first clip.

Anyone any ideas why this is?

Can you use HJSplit in this way or do you need to use another program (ideally free to download if possible).

Please can you keep the answers simple (not too 'techy' please)

Here's hoping someone out there knows what they're talking about .....

No - HJSplit isn't an editor, it just splits large files into smaller sections to make them easier to send to someone else.

To join avi clips with the best results, I'd suggest getting hold of either virtualdub or avidemux (both free & very similar to each other) - just google for the links.

Then, do this:

1 - Open the prog
2 - Click "File">>"Open" & select the first part
3 - Click "Append" & select the next part. Repeat for all the parts
4 - Add any filters you might want (re-size, brightness etc.)
5 - Save the movie

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arch...b_join_avi.cfm

NOTE - This only works if all the parts are identical, i.e. they all have the same properties, frame rate, audio, frame size, codec etc.
to join clips with different properties you'll have to convert them all to the same format

Or, there are plenty of file joiners out there - a simple google for "join avi" should give a result.

Slight problem with VirtualDub. I've downloaded a series of small clips of the same scene. I've opened the first clip however when I click on 'File' to get the driopdown menu where 'Append AVI Segment' is I find it ghosted out...... any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Not too sure - I don't use vdub anymore, I switched to avidemux a while ago after changing from windoze to Linux.

I should have mentioned this in my first reply,
After opening the first part, click the "Video" menu & select "Direct Stream Copy" then do the same for the "Audio" menu.

Then try appending the 2nd clip.

Check the vdub forum if you have any more trouble

Followed the instructions you gave and 'Append AVI Segment...' is stil ghosted out.

Also downloaded Avidemux and there was a number of exe files in it of which the only one that I managed to get some files joined was avidemux2_gtk.exe. The resulting joined clip was a little down on picture quality anf I lost the sound completely. At this point I ought to mention that I'm on Windows Vista 32 bit.

I can actually run avidemux2_qt4.exe which looks like a more up-to-date program however I've not managed to get any files joined together with this yet!

i don't have much time at the moment but as for the audio, I've found you can improve it by changing the audio tab to "lame", if you've got the right codecs installed this should convert the audio to mp3.

You should also google for the doom9 forum/site, they have tutorials for just about everything regarding video conversion.

Are you sure it's an avi file? Go to File -> file information.
Otherwise, try Peck's Power Join. It is good, but old, so it may not work on a new OS.

All I want is a simple program that will just take any avi file and just add one onto the back of another, etc. Surely there must be something simple out there that works on Vista and for which you don't need a PhD in Video formats to work!

Default HJSplit and Passwords

I've been able to join multiple files without a problem before. However, I am having trouble with the ones that require a password to open the zipped file. I do have the password and am able to open the zipped files. But when I go to use HJSplit to join them I get an "Invalid Floating Point Operation" message.

Can anyone take me step by step through to open these ones with passwords?

Again, so there is no confusion, I do have the password. I am not tying to crack anything.

Thanks.
