A bit like fire drill but you had to get as far away from the school as possible. Everything was political here, everyday bombs went off there was gunfire and it just became normal to us. Growing up in Belfast was not normal. It was a war zone. But somebody decided to call it "troubles".
Billy. In the six years I attended secondary school I knew 3 kids ( males ) that had been decanted because of the "troubles" to my school. There were probably?? more of both sexes. As a kid I did not know much of what they had gone through but I do know that one was a total wanker hard bas--rd. The other two had real " in their head" problems. All three only went to my school for one school year before they move away. No idea why but the kids had problems.

We only had Fire Drills and we were never worried about bullets and bombs just bullies and kickings.

I never worried about bullets or bombs either. I couldn't stop them. But the obtuse political vibes were imprinted into you. Took me a long time to get rid of that crap. I know my first mental breakdown was caused by the war. But I got through it. Bullies and kickings; yes happened all the time. That's why I took up boxing. As a short arse you need to have a bit of suss. So when bully boy comes over to pick on you, you knock him down. Never was bothered again. The problem was that kids grew up surrounded by hatred and bigotry. It is not normal to force 11 yo kids to watch masked men blow a persons kneecaps to bits with a pistol. But at the time it seemed normal to me. The guy who was "done" on concrete had his elbows shot out too.
Thank god it is mostly history now.

My "school" had four houses named after the same colours as Mal's. They even painted the doors incase you were so thick you got lost.

I was a very bad student when I was young. I don't even remember when I needed to get up for grammar school. Also one very bad problem I had was I was born with very bad teeth. My Teeth stuck out so much I could not close my mouth. When I was only five years old my dentist had to put a special bite plate on the roof of my mouth which was connected to my teeth preventing them from moving anymore. When I was older I started to see an Orthodontist, and began what was to be 15 years of steel braces on both my lower and upper set of teeth. I was given over those many painful years every gadget made for people who had bad what are called mouth occlusions. I had rubber bands which connected some of the upper teeth to the lower teeth. I had a head gear which I had to wear to school which caused all the other students to stare at me all day. Also my teeth were abnormally large, and to make room for the other teeth to be pushed back by the braces four of my adult teeth had to be pulled out. I now have only 28 adult teeth. Me and my two brothers walked the one half mile to school every day. This school did not have a school lunch program, so we had to walk back home at noontime and Mom would make our lunches, and then we would walk back to school after 12:30 p.m. and then walk back home again after 3:30 p.m. when school closed. We did that for 8 years. As I said before I was a poor student . I did not like homework, and I did very poorly on tests. I barely was able to graduate grammar school. My two brothers on the other hand loved school and did rather well. Then as I turned 14 I went to South Shore High School. Again My brother J and I walked the almost 1 mile to school. Luckily high school had a cafeteria so I brought my lunch from home and ate it at the cafeteria. I was a much better student in High School, but my brother really shined. He was in all the Honor classes, while I was just a typical student who mostly got C's for my classes while my brother got A's, and B's. I really struggled through math classes, and often had to attend Summer school to make up classes that I did poorly in. Eventually though both my brother and I graduated from high school. Our graduating class had 368 students. My brother was number 4, and I was number 162. By the time we graduated the neighborhood had changed drastically. South Shore had changed in just 15 years from an all Caucasian neighborhood to almost 95 % black. Because of this my Mom and Dad decided not to send my younger brother to our high school. Instead he was put into the University of Chicago Lab School which was the High School sponsored by the University of Chicago.

Speaking of houses we had those too.
In my primary school we had Dickens, Athlone, Pembroke and Cromwell although the colours are a bit sketchy.
Named after famous historical figures

In my secondary school(big school if you will) we had
Brasher, Bannister, Board, Peters - these were named after athletes
Chris Brasher, Sir Roger Bannister, Lilian Board(Long Jumper) and Mary Peters(Pentathlete) I was in Pembroke and Bannister respectively.

Our houses were named Cook, Tasman, Pompallier and Kupe. Pompallier was the first Catholic Bishop in New Zealand (or something like that) and Kupe was the semi-legendary Polynesian explorer who first discovered New Zealand.

I absolutely despised the house system, and was one of the principle reasons I read maybe half of Harry Potter and threw it away.

If Greenman was in Green that would be spooky.

Unless he took his handle from his old school house, in which case it would be just sad.

No oddly I was always in a RED house - mostly that house had some crap football players and athletes so we rarely won a lot of house points in those sports. When I first saw this thread I thought it was referring to the old Spectrum computer game also called SkoolDaze-any one remember playing that?
