I've had a few. My first one was a late 1970s Honda Hawk. It was a Motorcycle that only had two gears and no clutch See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hondamatic. Something about the Hawkamatic transmission. Was a bitch to start as it only had a kick start and the choke was really particular. Bought it off a college bud for $300. Had it about a two years. It broke down on the side of the highway and I left it there.
Next was a 1983? Honda Rebel. A little 250cc job that was basically maintenance free. Not fast and that was okay. Easy to pick up. Great for running around locally. I rode it almost a year with a dead battery because I could push start it from a straddle in a parking lot all in one motion. The gas mileage was fantastic. Probably my favorite bike ever for just getting around. I got a ridiculous offer to sell it, so I got rid of it after about 10 years. Currently I have a 2004 Kawasaki Vulcan 500EN. Nothing special. Big enough and powerful enough to barely ride on the highway --but not for long trips. Has many more moving parts than the Rebel ever did and a lot of maintenance is above my skill. I've had it since 2004 and really don't ride it much. The traffic around here is just too crazy. Mine looks almost identical this one.

The times are a-changing in London; Mayor Khan is bringing in pollution rules which will require bikes registered before 2006 (when EU3 was introduced) to pay £12.50 a day for the privilege of entering Central London. Naturally, there will no scrap-age scheme for affected machines, disproportionately owned by people who can't afford to casually buy new motorcycles. It will cost the London Assembly and the Mayor not a penny; they get to look good and pose as friends to the environment; people on lower incomes to be the losers, but who cares about that?
I am buying a new motorcycle [i.e actually new, not used] for the first time ever. It is a Royal Enfield Himalayan: a 411cc single all-round commuter / tourer / on-road off-road thingie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=zxa9QBTMabo OTR price is £4,199 and you get a lot for that money. But I also get a finance agreement which is very fair if I am being honest, but which I would rather not be taking on. Only time will tell whether I made a good decision or a bad one.

You might understand why I went sour on bikes before I was old enough to ride one. Every wednesday I passed the Dunstall shop with a Dominator in the window. Worse still, an old geezer (probably 35) in our street had a Vincent Black Prince. One of my pals followed him for a couple of miles and swore he never changed gear after pulling away out of our street uphill in second.
