I saw school as some kind of prison.
I was forever looking out of the windows, longing for freedom. At eleven years old I had a reading age of twenty one. Mentally I was very strong, but physically I didn't really start to take off until I was fifteen. This was unfortunate, because school was in the tougher area of town. 50% of my classmates ended up in prison, which should give you some idea of what I was up against. I didn't share their passion for crime, so you can imagine the friction this caused. I took some hidings at the time, then later, as I came into myself, I extracted a level of revenge. I cut that short when I figured out that made me just as bad as they were. Whatever, I survived. Even without all that, I would still have hated school. Jag. (Bit of a tough little shit ... with good reason ...... )

Typical of school discipline in the 60's Victor. At my school if the Headmaster got hold of you then you couldn't sit down for a week, luckily for me he didn't find me sexually attractive.......

I can't say that I liked any of the schools I went to. Grammar school, High school, College. All terrible, but my parents attribute this to the fact that I was a lousy student. It is true. I hated to do homework, but did it grudgingly. Then once it was finished and dinner was finished I watched my favorite t.v. shows. Yes I was a t.v. junkie. Back in the 60's when I was between years 10-19 I couldn't wait to watch t.v. in the evening. My parents though had other ideas. They forced me to join the cub scouts ( a younger version of the boy scouts ). I hated it, and because of it missed all the seasons of that great t.v. show:
The Twilight ZoneIt wasn't till many years later that I was able to see all the episodes on the old SCI-FI cable series. |

In my day, school was the three r's and sport and you sorted out your own bullying issues. Today it's a more holistic approach with an emphasis on nurturing children, but the curriculum seems too crowded.
I don't know which is the best method. |
