SERENITY
Mr.McConaughey your new movie is not alright, alright, alright !!!! PRAISE: The movie starts off well enough.Sometimes up and sometimes down fishermen Baker Dill(Matthew McConaughey) and his off and on again fishing partner Duke (Djimon Hounsou),take people out on big catch fishing expeditions. There's the sultry Constance (Diane Lane),who Dill hits the sheets with for cash. Then his ex Karen Zariakas (Anne Hathaway)walks back into his life with femme fatale swagger and complications ,and is now married to the rich, smug, and nasty Frank (Jason Clarke). The cast really gives it their all and there is enough in the first half to hold my interest. After awhile i said to myself well this is basically like the 20 Lifetime movies i have been forced to watch over the years but hey lets see how they execute this it might be basic but interesting....then the reveals came and i wasnt ready. PROBLEMS: The twist was lukewarm to me and it's funny i thought they had given it away in recent TV ads for the movie but boy was i wrong. The execution is long and drawn out.To talky with lame symbolism and weirdly shot scenes. Then i realized how much more was meaningless really everything was and it actually made me laugh. The conclusion was so obnoxious i sat up in my seat, looked at the floor and laughed some more. In fact when i really think about it the conclusion is kind of creepy. I know this will end up on a lot of the worst of 2019 lists.I suggest you rent this or watch it when it hits cable and have a few drinks while doing so Scale of 1-10 a 3½ |

I watched "1898, Our Last Men in the Philippines" - a movie regarding a small garrison of Spanish troops in an isolated village north of Manila. 54 men in a small village where the previous garrison had 37 killed in an attack and the rest surrendered. They are fighting Tagalog natives armed with machetes and whatever they took off the Spanish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1898,_...he_Philippines
The garrison comes under siege for the better part of a year. This movie had good reviews. The garrison's last official communications received are that the Americans have declared war on Spain. After that the leaders of the Spanish refuse to believe newspapers stating that the war is over, that Spain sold Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Philippines to the US for 20 million dollars, etc. etc. The needless deaths and suffering were painful to watch. Informative as I had never heard of this "siege of Baler". This is more of a Spanish side version of events. Some of the decisions by the rebels, I disagreed strongly with - for example if the Spanish shoot women for singing, I'd kill everyone I could get - war or no war. Not really a movie to watch if you are wondering what we are trying to accomplish in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you want to be depressed, a movie to watch - 3 of 5 stars from me. |

The second of the two subtitled movies I watched was "The Duelist" (2016) A Russian language film that seemed to be a version of Chuck Norris as an aggrieved Russian minor Noble in the 1860's. I did not recognize most of the dueling pistols. The rules were varied and unfamiliar also. For some reason I was expecting swords. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Duelist_(2016_film)
I know nothing of Russian nobility and doubt I learned anything accurate from this movie. It too got high ratings. The pretty near flat chested actress who did some nudity was no Mandy Dee. Some scenes were implausible to me, but maybe not to you. I'd give it 2 of 5 stars, if you got nothing to do - it will fill the time up. |

That read was more interesting than the movie which was not the same story.
The movie was more of the unkillable Chuck Norris crap. |

finished the last of the It's Alive trilogy
It's Alive III: Island of the Alive (1987) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093286/ After a moving courtroom scene with father Stephen Jarvis (Michael Moriarty) trying to let the judge know the mutated babies are still just children the judge decides to send them to an uninhabited island. Step forward a few years and a group of hunters secretly set out to track and kill the babies for sport however the buggers have grown a fair bit and have lost none of their violent streak. Jarvis is hired to go with an expedition to the island to see how the children have developed from hereon in it's non-stop as the babies have somehow managed to have another child, they manage to down a helicopter and take over a boat leaving Jarvis stranded and drifting into Cuban waters. It's crammed with humour, action and killings and has a decent cast including Karen Black as Ellen Jarvis and lots of Director Larry Cohen's friends appearing in supporting roles. Not a classic but great fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_HfT3LQ7H0

I guess I could have said, "The movie was more of the unkillable Petr Fedorov crap" - but he did die in that nearly unwatchable "Stalingrad" (2013) movie - lol
They do both seem to have that same wooden facial expression - either stoic or can't act - your pick. I guess I am expecting too much. Really though, the only nude lady in the film isn't busty? Greatly added to my disappointment. |

Filmworker (2018)
The story of Leon Vitali, originally a good actor who, after having played a role in 'Barry Lyndon', basically spent the next 30+ years working for Stanley Kubrick in just about any way he was asked to. For me, watching was a melancholy experience, especially seeing how he ended up after Stanley died. Filmworker trailer
