Frannkly, My Dear, Mary Frann Was a Dear
.
ROCKFORD FILES, "A Fast Count"; she was thirty-five. So who the heck was Mary Frann? Darned if I knew. I was collecting screen shots for an actress from a Rockford Files episode, and the NBC site offering HD quality that I was on suddenly switched to the next episode, showing an attractive actress in sexy mode, and I found myself shifting to the world of Mary, Mary... quite contrary to the lady being worked on. The primary question then became, to what extent did Mary go to make your garden grow? ........ With Bob Newhart; in the second image, Mary is seen with show regulars Peter Scolari, Julia Duffy and Tom Poston, in an ad from the Sept. 27, 1986 issue of TV Guide magazine. Subsequent poking around led to the discovery she was one of those actresses who made a point of downplaying her skin exposure (aw! Given how she has refused to play ball, the odds were against her having a VEF thread, and yet here we are), and in addition, that it's not as though she was an unknown. Her biggest fame claim was appearing as Bob Newhart's wife on the popular 1982-1990 sitcom Newhart — so it's not as though she wasn't being watched in her TV show episodes and very few films... in my case, she just didn't register. Mary played a stewardess in a 1968 episode of GET SMART. During the 1960s, she was mostly credited as "Jennifer Douglas," what must have been a stage name that she dropped, deciding to use her real name. After making a handful of breakthroughs in the 1960s, her career really got going in the 1970s, when she appeared in an extensive range of many of the popular TV shows of the time. Her real claim to fame, at least among soap fans, was her starring role in Days Of Our Lives from 1974-79, where she appeared in over four hundred episodes. Ms. Frann has almost no movie credits to speak of (thus lessening the chances to get down and dirty), aside from two features no one has heard of, Nashville Rebel (1966) and Woman in the Rain (1976), and the released-on-video Fatal Charm (1990) — which features half-hearted nudity, but it's certainly not Ms. Frann's. Mom and daughter in FATAL CHARM Mary's minimal screen time was spent while playing an imperfect mother for a teen who is infatuated with a man accused of rape and murder. (Nudity came from a body double for the lead, nineteen-year-old Amanda Peterson, a finalist for the title role of John Huston's Annie, and who at least got rewarded by being cast as one of the orphans. Amanda died fairly young of a drug overdose.) Mary looked majestic in this episode. Maybe her appearance in the Rockford Files episode (from Season 5's "A Fast Count," 1978) constituted her sexiest appearance anywhere, but before taking a look at the lady from that exercise, my having discovered that the actress had appeared in a former episode (Season 1's "Counter Gambit," 1975) led me to collect what follows. Mary must have filled the pockets of many manicurists. There was (albeit imaginary; see first photo above) nudity in the episode, but certainly not Ms. Frann's. Also featured were a couple of "sexual" tidbits, where in one scene Mary's character had to rendez-vous in a porn theater, (first photo below) and what she sees on screen renders her transfixed. (The gag was, once Rockford noticed what the commotion was about, he became immersed as well.) In addition, as seen in the last couple of shots below, when Mary gets kissed during the show's conclusion, she sticks her tongue out. (I realize that's hardly "sex," but when it comes to this actress, these served as rare instances when she "put out" for the screen.) In perhaps her sexiest role (for "A Fast Count"), Mary played a used car lot queen, one proud to have come up in a man's world, adopting a sassy Dolly Parton type of demeanor (and accent). Unlike her relatively angelic first role, she displayed an edge, and thus was the prime suspect for a murder. At any rate, her "come hither" pose in a TV commercial advertising her cars just may have presented the lady at her sluttiest. When research led to this page of a site (which describes the plot, if you're interested) that is dedicated to "villainous beauties," I dug up the "Secrets" episode of The Hitchhiker, where our lady played a bad girl (she and lover target hubby to get his money), since the odds usually favor the looseness of villainesses. Well, there was one bedroom scene, and check out the choice for her wardrobe... dorky pajamas! (Third photo below.) She had a fabulous nose, just. This role was in 1991, when the lady was forty-eight, and yet (as a testament to her loveliness) she was still qualified to get cast for the sexy femme fatale type of role. The nineties brought a career slow-down; her next role was three years later, and then she had to wait another three years before her next screen appearance (capping off with two more, from 1998 and 1999). ................ Attending the 46th Golden Globe Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, on Jan. 28, 1989. The actress was a regular in 1982's short-lived TV series, King's Crossing, and next to the promo portrait, she is seen with Beatrice Straight in the third photo. Reason for the slow-down, as claimed in her lovingly-written IMDb bio, appears to be a heart condition that was detected in 1993. It's said she became obsessed about losing weight, putting strain on her body. She died in her sleep of a heart attack at the age of fifty-five, shortly before she was to be wed for a second time. Mary Frann began her show business career as a child model and went on to win the title of America's Junior Miss in 1961; probably she didn't need to be too persuaded, given this attachment, to co-host the 28th annual America's Junior Miss Television Special with athlete Bruce Jenner. The photo is dated Jan. 1, 1985, and they are posing with Amber Kvanli, who was 1984's Junior Miss. I blocked her in this shot to be on the safe side, but then learned there were few under-eighteens in this contest — and this photo was from the following year, increasing the odds she was of legal age. You can see Amber in this YouTube video, when she won her crown. Out on what appears to have been a date with lucky Arsenio Hall (Mary was single, available, and unlike what she showed on the screen, cooking) at the 15th Annual People's Choice Awards, held at Disney Studios in Burbank and televised in 1989. The last photo is identified as an outing at the Third Annual American Cinematheque Awards on May 6, 1988 at the Century Plaza Hotel, and we may see Mary was not too proud to be caught in the same dress twice. Photos taken by Ron Galella. Lorenzo Lamas and William R Moses were with Mary Frann in 1985's Battle Of The Network Stars XVII. God bless this entertaining show, providing views of sexpots in often revealing ways. Why, the second photo allowed for our lady to show more flesh than she ever has in her other screen appearances. . Last edited by Findcandor; May 15th, 2023 at 09:32 AM.. |
