I've now read the law and to be honest there's a lot of uncertainty in it.

The law applies to 'commercial' porn sites which has yet to be defined by the government (could include any site that makes money, through ads or even at a loss from what I've read), and the BBFC has been granted the power to focus its efforts on whether the site has a lot of users world-wide, a lot of under-18 users in the UK or makes a lot of money.

Other than that they can notify anyone who allows VEF to function (servers, advertisers, banks etc.) to that VEF would be breaking the law, but I don't think that can enforced in court.

So long as no-one is the UK is responsible for VEF or any of the ways it manages to function aren't spooked by the BBFC notifying it, the worst that could happen is a ISP block to UK users it appears.

If I read that correctly? You started a panic based on something you'd heard, but not read up on? But now you have read up on it, you agree with the rest of us? Classic.

The biz perhaps needs to look - in a spirit of enlightened self-interest - at how it safeguards access for British customers. (I believe they are second only to Yanks as porn subscribers.) A VPN may be viable for free sites like this, and its host sites, but many subscription sites bar access via VPNs. The other likely issue is the UK government blocking British CC payments to (e.g.) CC Bill.

Still nastier is the UK's criminalisation of mre possession of "extreme" porn, which may include fairly routine BDSM stuff. The Melon Farmers site reports Lady Elspeth Howe - wido of Geoffrey "Dead Sheep" Howe - seeking to criminalise possession of anything which wouldn't be passed by the BBFC.

Most of the laws they bring in are just scare mongering & preaching to the converted
so they'll vote conservative at the next election

erotica / Porn is a free kick for both sides

The example of UK companies moving to Europe and then mailing everything illegally in the post to UK customers shows all too well how much true teeth anti-porn laws really have

Avoid genres like kiddie porn , scat & bestiality .
Stay away from grooming under age kids online because their most likely Cops in disguise
Stay away from torrents if you dont know how to hide your IP address.
Always act innocent and helpful if ever you receive a threatening email/letter from lawyers.

Do all the above and the worst is likely to be confiscated items in themail on very rare occasions

Its very clear that the authorities & copyright holders have given up trying to coerce the public into doing the right thing so they crack down on the creators & hosting platforms not the end users

You only need look at the 3-6 times warning nonsense at the ISP level to see not everyone is singing from the same hymn book

Articles like this show exactly why there inevitably toothless laws - too many are doing it

Last time I check Great Britain didn't make the law in my country... they can ban whatever they want in their country, but thank God they don't rule an empire anymore.

Britain can't do more than what China does, they can block stuff to appear on british IP adress and this is it.
