I admittedly went to watch The Shallows for ONE reason:

But, no, it actually WAS a very good movie, and like you said, it did in fact, at the very least, hold up its own against a classic like Jaws. And for a current movie to do that, not easy.

If anyone here has never watched a Larry Fessenden movie, please go watch some, if not all, that he's directed and/or written. Maybe even starred in. Habit from 1997 (or 1995, there's a whole argument with when this movie actually came out) is perhaps his most, if not THE, standout film he's made. But he's got other lesser known, even more indie ones, as well. He's also made this one from 2001, which a certain someone on here should really check out:

One more suggestion is Abel Ferrara's The Addiction from 1995. This is a modern vampire movie done RIGHT. It's not teen angst Twilight stuff, not action type stuff like Underworld or Blade, but also not a cliche, classical take on vampirism like Dracula or something. It takes a realistic approach and serves as an allegory for drug or alcohol addiction. Check it out. It stars Lili Taylor, one of my personal favorite underrated actresses.

Greatest horror movies I have ever seen overall...
1.) John Carpenter's The Thing
2.) Jaws
3.) Alien

Top favorite slasher movies... (not necessarily greatest as the original TCM & Halloween are inevitably superior)
1.) Halloween 4 - The Return of Michael Myers (88)
2.) Cold Prey (06)
3.) Cold Prey 2 (08)
4.) Halloween 2 (81)
5.) Friday the 13th Part 6 - Jason Lives (86)
6.) A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Dream Warriors (87)
7.) Friday the 13th Part 5 - A New Beginning (85)

The Thing is vastly inferior to the 1951 version

However the 1981 version is a more faithful adaptation of the original source material, Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr

The 1951 Thing is a great horror movie but just as Alien can be seen as a big budget remake of It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958) they both have to be seen in the context of the period they were made.

The 50s the Thing was a solid good monster movie, the 82 Thing is possibly the greatest horror movie ever made. That isn't just me that has become almost universal, it's only competitor being the Exorcist probably in terms of public opinion.
The Thing, The Blob & the Fly all were far surpassed by their 80s remakes.
The most severely close in quality was the 50s & 70s Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

I've heard the 70s Nosferatu vastly supassed the original. But I haven't seen it so will reserve judgment.

All a matter of opinion of course but I don't think I have ever heard anyone claim Herzog's Nosferatu as being superior to Murnau's. Herzog's version is a decent film with excellent photography but I prefer the original. Yes it does seem a bit dated (and hilarious in parts) but we have to look at the time it was made.

While there are some great remakes (the ones you mention; Thing, Fly) there have also been some forgettable ones as well. Psycho, The Haunting and the Wicker Man spring to mind.

Murnau's Nosferatu (photography) is incredible.
