A friend of mine from Europe who is an expert skier told me that he is coming to the Pacific Northwest to ski and asked me to tell him the best place in Oregon that most people have never heard of to backcountry ski. He told me that he wants lines, abundant snow, and low cost. My friend skis K2 5500 Unlimiteds.
Hoodoo Butte, Hayrick Butte. -- East face of Hoodoo Butte. Lines: 7.5-8.5, 25°-35°, 200-400 feet. -- Hayrick Butte offers world-class minus steeps. Lines: 8.0-9.5, 35°-50°, 200-400 feet. -- 300-350 inches of snow annually. -- Powder skiable for 36-48 hours after storm until late March. -- 2-4 inch corn skiable for 2-6 hours/day mid March thru late April. -- Stay in a 2-star motel in Bend for $80/night and drive an hour. -- Sleep in your vehicle at Ray Benson Sno-Park. Sno-park passes are $4/day, $25/Year. -- Hoodoo Ski Area ticket is $51. Hayrick is earn-your-turns. Atmosphere is Grand Targhee. The "Boys from Bend" asked me to give this message to the management at Hoodoo Ski Area: "Ban Snowboarding" |

A long time ago Aspen Highland had a run that started from the top of a narrow ridge. Called Loges Peak it was a real adrenaline rush to ski it. Unfortunately later years it was widened so that more skiers would use it so its just a shadow of it's former self.

"It's just a shadow of it's former self." An epithet for alpine skiing. Snowboarders, park brats, funny-shaped skis. My God. "1 day of skiing at Bridger in 1963 is better than a week of skiing at Big Sky now." Last edited by OldSchool47; February 18th, 2017 at 10:58 PM.. Reason: Added "now" after Big Sky. "now" = 2005-2017 |

People skied on wood skis in the 1950s. Turning on wood skis typically cuts mounds of snow 1.5 feet in height with a diameter of 12 feet.
Skiers switched to fiberglass skis in the 1960s. You can turn more quickly with fiberglass skis and your turns cut more deeply into the snow. Fiberglass skis typically cut mounds of snow 1-3 feet in height with a diameter of 4 feet. Moguls. Mogul skiing became a popular sport in the early-to-mid 1970s. The movie Winter Equinox is about mogul skiing. It documents the 1974 Freestyle Skiing Pro Tour. The movie is almost as good as Bruce Brown's surfing classic The Endless Summer. I wish that someone would post Winter Equinox on The Pirate Bay so that everyone, especially younger skiers, can experience the uniqueness and excitement of mogul skiing in the 1970s. I remember my 1st daffy at Mary Jane in 1977. I thought that I was John Clendenin. |

You are not required by law to wear a helmet when you ski. If you are skiing at a ski area without a helmet and someone affiliated with the ski area tells you that you must wear a helmet or tells you that it is a good idea to wear a helmet, tell him or her "no, I do not wear a helmet when I ski" and report him or her to the management of the ski area. Write a letter to your U.S. Senator and Congressperson detailing the incident. If someone affiliated with the ski area continues to harass you, file a lawsuit. You will win.
I do not wear a helmet when skiing because the probability that a helmet will prevent me from injuring myself is minuscule. If you get injured skiing, you will injure: 1. Your knee. 2. Your hip. 3. Your shoulder. 4. Your back. 5. Your neck. Please note that wearing a helmet does not prevent neck injuries. Ski helmets are an expensive, unnecessary, and cumbersome piece of equipment. "Better safe than sorry." Scare tactics used to justify the half-ass guidelines that underpin the wearing of helmets when skiing. |

The 3 biggest mistakes made by alpine ski-industry Illuminati during the past 30 years.
1. Allowing snowboarders to board the same runs that skiers ski. The Illuminati should have given snowboarders their own snowboard areas or their own snowboard-only runs in ski areas in the 1990s when the sport mainstreamed. Skiers and snowboarders get more feel-good energy per run when they ski and board separate runs rather than the same run. Separate sandboxes. 2. Replacing straight skis with shaped skis. Shaped skis are too easy to ski. Too easy = boring = not fun. Is fishing fun if you catch your limit every day? 3. Manufacturing and promoting the use of ski helmets. $50 for a helmet is money for nothing. Wearing a helmet when you ski makes you look like an idiot. Skiing's past. Skiing's present. Skiing's future. |
