[QUOTE=Pianaman;1617277]- Barrington Bayley QUOTE]
I have no financial interest in either of the sites listed and if I am posting something verboten just delete this post but I have found two great sites on line for just about every book genre. They are Abebooks.com and Thriftbooks.com. Give them a try to find what you might be missing from any collection. |

It's hard to find good science fiction writers. Unfortunately science fiction has always been a hotbed for trash and I say this as someone who loves science fiction.
My favorite authors so far: Stanislaw Lem Arkady & Boris Strugatsky Arthur C. Clarke Philip K. Dick Neal Stephenson I enjoy the books by William Gibson and Isaac Asimov as well. |

Larry Niven
I have to agree with the comment on trash. I too love Science Fiction and have since the age of 8. That was a very long time ago.
Some years ago Larry Niven would have been at the top of my list but not anymore unfortunately. I remember eagerly awaiting a new Niven. The concepts just blew me away. I don't believe those concepts are in his current work. It is just ho hum. I think the change happened somewhere around Integral Trees. Mote in God's Eye, Ringworld was great. So somewhere after those two. I agree with the choice of Neal Stephenson. Cryptonomicon is another concept story. Truly brilliant. Another fav. is Bob Shaw. He said once that he had a copy of Lord of the Rings at home and he knew exactly where it was. It was on the floor at the wall opposite his bed where he would fling it on the occasions when he tried to read it. |

More authors
William Gibson is another author who can have mind blowing concepts. At the time of release I did not care too much about Pattern Recognition but have since come to enjoy it.
David Brin has some memorable stuff. I was in the UK at the time of release and picked up a copy of Kil'n People. (The US version does not have the apostrophe.) Another author who started well was Vernor Vinge. A Fire upon the Deep and A deepness in the Sky were fantastic but Rainbows End was forgettable. (Achieved this already. I can't even remember if there was an apostrophe in the title) |

Still more authors
I was in Toronto in 1973 for Torcon 2 the World Science Fiction Con.
William Rotsler was there. I think he was a speaker. The interesting thing was that he brought along two female models. One relatively unknown Vivienne Wallace. She went topless as part of the costume play and the photographers suddenly woke up. The other model was Joyce Mandel (early Alexis Love) who stayed in the background and did not remove any kit. I recognized her walking along a hallway and took a photo. She smiled and I could have lingered but had run out of film. I should have lingered anyway but the wife was hanging on my arm. I was surprised by how tiny Joyce was. |
