Scounds, ever read Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter? Even with the subject of extramarital sex, it's so effing boring that you couldn't make a decent porn out of it.
I own a book called Great Short Works of Nathanial Hawthorne which includes The Scarlet Letter. I read it in 1983 and have never read it since. Enough said.

Fortunately Mr Hawthorne was a good writer of allegorical short stories and there a few really striking and excellent short stories in there which I have read since. The two I like best are Ethan Brand, The Last Chapter of a Romance; and Young Goodman Brown. Both of these are stories about a man selling his soul to the Devil though in different ways; and this is a recurring theme in Hawthorne's writing. Arguably this is what Mr Hawthorne did in real life, when he wrote the campaign literature for Franklin Pierce's successful campaign for the US Presidency in 1851. I think God punished him by taking away his gift; he never wrote a story agains which was worth a damn.

I have well over 2000 books, Most are in book cases but probably a hundred or more in boxes. Most of them are best-sellers but I also collect CS Forrester and Nigel Tranter. Most of my other books are reference volumes, encyclopedia, atlases, etc.
