You need a "composite video to USB adapter" - there are a lot of them around, check Amazon or even eBay. Most of the decent-seeming ones are priced around $35 to $45 US, though you can find questionable ones for as little as $6 or so.

As ubu_roi says above, a composite to USB would do the job. I paid about £20 for the one shown below.

A TV card (if your motherboard has a spare slot) will also have inputs that would allow you to connect external devices if you want a neater and more permanent connection.

They come with the software on a disc. They record as they play, but you can choose the format you wish to do this in from a list beforehand. I have the EZGrabber USB device myself, found on most good sites for between £16-£20, depending on their mood that week.... Wors fine, though I find the fact you have to sit there and let it record, and the size a little annoying. I'm sure other more expensive grabbers or capture devices remedy such little gripes though......

Strictly live recording from a VCR, so if the movie's an hour and ten minutes long, it'll take an hour and ten minutes to transfer it.

Sadly no, it's not as simple as drag and drop. It captures in real time, that's to say; you play the tape or the portion of it you want to capture and using whatever software comes with your kit, click to record/stop when you've captured what you want. Think of it as more like cassette taping tracks from vinyl; you can pick just one track or record the whole album, but either way you'll have to wait for it to play at normal speed. Damn, that makes me feel old.

If you want to change the file type and/or size to something not included with your software, I'm sure there are (freeware?) programs that'll do it, but I have little knowledge or experience in that area.

You might find the 'Useful Programs' thread helps with that.

If you can't find what you want you could also try the 'Useful Programs - Requests, Questions and Discussions' thread.

Edit: Most of what I've said has already been covered, but the links might be of some use.

yes; that's the little buddy.... as i said, it records to most usual formats; just that some formats do this in quite a large file size. again depends on the size of clip/movie your recording of course. I recorded 'Sperma Klinik' recently, got an MPEG of 1hr 26 mins, at 859mbs.

sometimes it makes sense to check section stickies before starting new threads.
