Win Vista call stack
I need to get a copy of a "call stack" to help diagnose a program problem in Windows Vista.
Is there a special program for this or something? e.d. |

You can install the Windows debugger, which will produce full crash dump reports. You can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=26798 |

That's farther than I was expecting to go ... but it reminds me of something else (that might be useful to many other here, too!) I might have overlooked. Supplementary Question: At one time there was a progrom in Windows called Dr Watson that listed information about the OS when crashes occured--is there still something like that in Vista? (And where would I find instructions?) e.d. |

But Vista has more modern stuff, the Windows Error Reporting technologies. In Vista, there's a Control Panel item called "Problems Reports and Solutions" -- you'll want to look at that. I apologize for not being able to be more helpful -- I went from Win XP to Win 7 without ever running Vista, so I may be somewhat off base. What is it that you're trying to do? What program is crashing? Is it tech support that's asking you to send them a crash dump? |

For example, the problems only seem to exist after Office attempts to "helpfully interconnect" something between itself and the outside world ... Of course, this could also mean the anti-virus program or java are the culprits, too. Are there signs posted on the internet saying: "Computer bugs go and find e.d.! He knows enough to make your life interesting but not enough to hurt you! "? I wouldn't surprise me if there was. e.d. |

If its someone you know and he's willing to, ask the programmer to send you a "debug" compile of the application -- there's a compiler switch for it . . . if you have a debug version, when it crashes there's way more info. Microsoft has a full page on the various debug tools you can install: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/wind.../gg463009.aspx There are a lot of choices -- it really depends on just what the programmer is doing. Here's a page devoted to capturing data from dotNet crashes: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dotnet/archi...s-crashes.aspx |

Joining 01.avi filebatches
Gentlemen(and ladies) - I bow to your superior knowledge in these matters and have to say that some recommendations on this thread have transformed things massively for me (Downthemall, 7zip). Many thanks!
The only remaining problem are these batches of 01.avi/02.avi etc. files that I've downloaded from VEF - how should I join them? Virtualdub throws a wobbly ("no DX50 compressor"). Nothing on the software discussion page either... I feel a bit like Rimmer in this clip of Red Dwarf: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVupRsbx8UM All help gratefully received! |
