Our experience with term limits here is that many stuff their pockets with lobbyists' dollars as quick as they can and jockey around trying to stay at the public trough. The lobbyists are more powerful in California after term limits than ever. All because Willie Brown was so much smarter than the Republicans.

I have much more optimism for the gerrymandering reform. In the short term it has made the Democrats totally dominant, but they'll screw it up. Hopefully we will be seeing lots of folks really representing their constituents in the legislature very soon.

Gavin Newsom as governor makes me want to barf.

Districting commissions have worked wonders. The first time I worked for a state legislative body was 1965 when we were under a court order to redistrict the state before doing any other business. The last redistricting had been done thirty years before; the most populous district had seven times the population of the least populous district. It took more than two months to get a map with enough votes to pass, while nothing else got done. The legislature did a redistricting again in 1971, then threw in the towel and created a commission. The legislature has done well since with extra months to work.

Term limits are, as you point out, a way of pushing out good legislators just as they are figuring out how the system works, making them totally reliant on lobbyists. Your state needs Jesse Unruh back.

On the few facts I observed, my candidate would be Tessa Fowler.

At least she knows to solve a rubik cube.
Not sure that a lot of candidates are able to realize this performance.
And... she seems to have a good sense of self derision.

She obviously has superior qualifications. Kamala Harris hasn't showed us her tits. Most of us really don't want to see Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, or Nancy Pelosi naked, much less Donald Trump or Mitch McConnell.

(P.S. I don't much like that naked and obese old man that shows up in my mirror.)

Elizabeth Warren makes big move toward 2020 presidential run
By ELANA SCHOR
Bruce Mann, Elizabeth Warren
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday took the first major step toward launching a widely anticipated campaign for the presidency, hoping her reputation as a populist fighter can help her navigate a Democratic field that could include nearly two dozen candidates.

“No matter what our differences, most of us want the same thing,” the 69-year-old Massachusetts Democrat said in a video that highlights her family’s history in Oklahoma. “To be able to work hard, play by the same set of rules and take care of the people we love. That’s what I’m fighting for and that’s why today I’m launching an exploratory committee for president.”

Warren burst onto the national scene a decade ago during the financial crisis with calls for greater consumer protections. She quickly became one of the party’s more prominent liberals even as she sometimes fought with Obama administration officials over their response to the market turmoil.

Now, as a likely presidential contender, she is making an appeal to the party’s base. Her video notes the economic challenges facing people of color along with images of a women’s march and Warren’s participation at an LGBT event.

In an email to supporters, Warren said she’d more formally announce a campaign plan early in 2019.

Warren is the most prominent Democrat yet to make a move toward a presidential bid and has long been a favorite target of President Donald Trump.

In mid-December, former Obama housing chief Julian Castro also announced a presidential exploratory committee, which legally allows potential candidates to begin raising money. Outgoing Maryland Rep. John Delaney is the only Democrat so far to have formally announced a presidential campaign.

But that’s likely to change quickly in the new year as other leading Democrats take steps toward White House runs.

Warren enters a Democratic field that’s shaping up as the most crowded in decades, with many of her Senate colleagues openly weighing their own campaigns, as well as governors, mayors and other prominent citizens. One of her most significant competitors could be Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who is eyeing another presidential run harnessing the same populist rhetoric.

She must also move past a widely panned October release of a DNA test meant to bolster her claim to Native American heritage. The move was intended to rebut Trump’s taunts of Warren as “Pocahontas.” Instead, her use of a genetic test to prove ethnicity spurred controversy that seemed to blunt any argument she sought to make. There was no direct mention of it in the video released Monday.

Speaking to reporters Monday outside her Cambridge, Massachusetts, home, Warren largely danced around a question on whether she wishes she had handled the DNA test release any differently.

“I have put it all out there. It’s there for anyone to see,” Warren said. “But at the end of the day ... this election going forward is going to be about the tens of millions of families across this country who work hard, who play to the rules and who just time after time take one body blow after another.”

Warren has the benefit of higher name recognition than many others in the Democratic mix for 2020, thanks to her years as a prominent critic of Wall Street who originally conceived of what became the government’s Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

She now faces an arduous battle to raise money and capture Democratic primary voters’ attention before Iowa casts its first vote in more than a year. She has an advantage in the $12.5 million left over from her 2018 re-election campaign that she could use for a presidential run.

Warren’s campaign is likely to revolve around the same theme she’s woven into speeches and policy proposals in recent years: battling special interests, paying mind to the nexus between racial and economic inequities.

“I run for office because I’m grateful down to my toes for the opportunities that were given to me, and I’m determined that we will give those same opportunities to not just some of our kids but to all of our kids,” Warren said.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, has announced she's running for president in 2020. The 37-year-old Gabbard said in a CNN interview slated to air Saturday night that she will be formally announcing her candidacy within the week.

Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard will seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, she told CNN in an interview.

"There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision. There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve," Gabbard said in an interview set to air Saturday on the network's The Van Jones Show.

"There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace. I look forward to being able to get into this and to talk about it in depth when we make our announcement," which will come within the next week, Gabbard said.

Foreign policy is an issue where Gabbard has staked out somewhat controversial positions. She's opposed to military intervention, and drew criticism in 2017 for meeting during a secret trip with Syrian President Bashar Assad whose oppressive regime has allegedly used chemical weapons on its own people.

"Whatever you think about President Assad, the fact is that he is the president of Syria," she told CNN's Jake Tapper when she returned from her trip. "In order for any peace agreement — in order for any possibility of a viable peace agreement to occur, there has to be a conversation with him."

U.S. Has 'Begun The Process' Of Withdrawing From Syria, Pentagon Says
President Trump has signaled he plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, a move which was opposed by some military advisers and contributed to the resignation of former Defense Secretary James Mattis.

The 37-year-old Gabbard was a supporter of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign in 2016, resigning her position as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee to endorse him. Sanders is also considering another White House bid in 2020. Gabbard was also critical of what she saw as then-DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz's preferential treatment of eventual nominee Hillary Clinton, and hit her for scheduling only six primary debates.

Republicans seized on Gabbard's announcement, highlighting that she's been a polarizing figure even within her own party.

"Tulsi Gabbard has an even bigger problem than her lack of experience – it's that she has no base of support. Liberals think she's too conservative, conservatives think she's too liberal, and just about everyone thinks her coziness with Bashar al-Assad is disturbing," said Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Ahrens in a statement.

First elected to Congress in 2012, Gabbard is an Army National Guard veteran who served in Iraq, making her one of the first two female combat veterans ever to serve in Congress. She is also the first Hindu ever elected to Congress.

'We Can Win': Elizabeth Warren Outlines 2020 Presidential Bid
Gabbard joins a growing list of Democrats who are seeking to challenge Trump next year. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has already announced she has set up a 2020 exploratory committee, and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro is expected to announce his campaign on Saturday. At least a dozen other major Democrats are also weighing bids.

Bay Area radio station KCBS, citing sources, reported the 54-year-old Democrat will announce her run for the White House “on or around” Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In recent days, Harris has embarked on a media tour to promote her just-published memoir titled “The Truths We Hold,” and she has faced numerous questions from media outlets about the possibility of running for president.

ADVERTISING

Harris has not given any strong indications that she is eyeing a 2020 run, recently telling the media that she would make a decision soon but not elaborating any further.

Harris and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who recently formed an exploratory committee but has not officially announced a presidential run, are considered among the top contenders for the Democratic nomination.

Many political experts believe other Democrats who may jump into the race include former Vice President Joe Biden, former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

On the Republican side, President Trump has stated on numerous occasions that he will run for reelection

She is one of the Senators supposedly representing us Californians. Frankly, she seems more interested in getting our campaign contributions than anything else. I sill think her resume is awfully thin.

Trump reaches highest approval rating yet, campaign manager says

Quote:
President Trump's re-election campaign manager Brad Parscale said Wednesday that 2020 is looking very promising.

In a flurry of tweets, flying under the radar of a news day focused on the standoff over the partial government shutdown, Parscale said internal polling shows the president has his highest approval rating since he began keeping tabs.

"Just received my newest voter score tracking from my team. @realDonaldTrump has reached his highest national approval rating since I started tracking," Parscale said. "The @TheDemocrats have really made a mistake going with their gut over data."

In brief, Parscale explained that his team, along with that of the Republican National Committee, have spent millions of dollars of polling, tracking, and voter scores. The Washington Examiner has reached out to the campaign asking for more details.

"Most likely more than any organization in America. The @TheDemocrats appear to not appreciate data," Parscale added, referring to Democrats who perhaps have clung on to what most public polls show. A RealClearPolitics average of polls shows the president's approval rating has mainly hovered between the mid-30s and mid-40s.

Parscale pointed to how public polling in the run-up to the 2016 election largely favored Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, leading up to his shocking victory.

"Our data actually predicted 2016 results within one electoral. In 2018 we predicted the results within a couple house seats and Senate seats perfectly. @realDonaldTrump outperformed in 2018 and we predicted that as well," Parscale said.
