Gilligan's Island, the show
I like this series. Yes it is stupid, Gilligan is always suborning everything. The Howell's, Mary Ann (hotter than Ginger, IMO), and Ginger always have fresh clothes. The skipper, Gilligan, and the professor always appear to be dressed the same.
Yes it is shallow but I also think it is really funny and for the time well done. The scenarios are banal but funny. I mean come on it is just suppose to be good fun and I think they achieved it. |

Okay okay. You've convinced me...and Gilligan was only ballsing things up because he knew he'd never have a shot at a threesome with Maryanne and Ginger if they got off the island.

Gilligan's Island is one of the more iconic American sitcoms and the reruns are still aired, so they must have done something right. It's always good for a laugh to see what the professor could cobble together from half of a coconut, string and some driftwood. And, I mean, you know, Mary Ann...

I had heard the song some years ago but I had no idea what this was all about but then when we got analogue satellite television and were able to see german channels I once saw a strange cartoon called Gilligan's Insel - which I later found to be a version of Gilligan's Island. Another reference to this series came in the Bill Murray christmas film 'Scrooged' when he sees his family playing a game Trivial Pursuit and one of them asks 'what was the name of Gilligan's boat?' The answer was The Minnow, but as for the series as far as I know it was never shown in this country, yet we got a lot of US series like Phil Silver Show(Bilko) and others like that.

I always thought it was funny that almost every week there was a guest star that got on the island and then left by the end of the episode, yet the castaways were stuck there. I still love watching Alan Hale (Skipper) look at the camera a la Oliver Hardy after a dust up with Gilligan. BTW, Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) was one of my earliest celebrity crushes.

In the opening sequence where the SS Minnow is sailing out, the flag is at half mast, it was filmed on the day that JFK was shot

Bye the bye only two of the seven are still around. Mary Ann and Ginger. The Professor died January, 2014. The rest obviously before that.

Here are five facts about the hit show that will surprise even the most ardent fan: 1. The Coast Guard would often receive telegrams from people who didn’t realize the show wasn’t real. 2. Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) was the only cast member to receive compensation from the show’s syndication. 3. Raquel Welsh auditioned for the role of Mary Ann. 4. Gilligan’s first name, though never mentioned on the show, was Willie. 5. The original pilot had a calypso theme song with different lyrics by composer John Williams, who later went on to pen the score to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Star Wars. |
