My mum used to make pasties every Saturday night for years, even after I got married I would go home for tea on a Saturday. My wife has her recipe, but they're not the same as I remember mum's being.
And my dad would occasionally make a fruit salad and homemade ice-cream combo. yum yum

I recently saw an episode of Chopped with grandmothers competing. Someone mentioned that handed down recipes don't taste the same when made by different people. It was reasoned that someone making something for decades knows exactly how it should look and feel. My sister is like that. She makes chocolate chip cookies that have a reputation for excellence. She's given the recipe, which is the basic Betty Crocker recipe, to others and they've come back to her saying they aren't the same. It all has to do with how my sister mixes the batter.

Both my folks were handy in the kitchen. My mom made the best meatballs and sauce I've ever had. In fact, everything she made was great. Christmas season was great because she would go into baking overload, cookies, brownies, ginger snaps, pies and cheesecakes. My dad loved to fire up the grill, but he made a sourdough bread from scratch that was out of this world. I also have to give shout outs to my grandpa for his homemade tortillas, my aunt Dee for her pumpkin bread and my aunt Dolly for her lasagna.

Father worked at two restaurants, one of which his father owned. He can still make great baked cod, scallops, and Mexican food.

Incidentally, George Clooney's dad used to have a TV show on which my relative sometimes appeared to advertise the restaurant in stereotypically "Mexican" attire with a burro. Now today, MALDEF and other activists would be offended by this, because my grandfather wasn't actually Latino. [He was, however, a Catholic with a mustache.]

My mum would make celery salt chicken, it's exactly that; coat chicken legs liberally with celery salt, then bake. Damn good.

I make it and it's fine but somehow it tastes better when she would make it.

My mother would do most of the cooking at their house but my dad made the best upper Midwest chili. Other than that he was responsible for grilling up the burgers, hot dogs, and steaks in the summer.

My mother made the best lasagna I ever had and the best potato soup. For me there was nothing better on a cold winter day than a bowl of her soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. I made the best grilled cheese sandwich in the family so that was my job while my mother did everything else.

But only on Christmas Eve.

My mum used to make the most wonderful pot roasted brisket with caramelized onions in the pressure cooker. Although I have a pressure cooker I have never managed to repeat the taste.
