Improve video colors
Hello,
Some videos are quite dark. For example, here are a few screenshots from Sleeping Beauty Aroused: It looks like a grey veil is over the video.. Do you know a way to re-encode the video in order to improve the colors or make the video less dark? (Maybe with ffmpeg? or maybe it's just not possible ... ) Thanks a lot experts !

There are a few programs out there to do this: VirtualDub,MeGUI,TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 6, to name three, there are lots more on the market too.
In a lot of cases, like your example the video is dark for a purpose, to hide the fact the original film transfer was not deinterlaced using the correct filter, IMHO. Sometimes you can correct this and sometimes you can't, but hey its fun having a go. The programs above are well documented on the internet, have a look around, you will be suprised what you can do with these programs. |

Make sure you back up the original file before playing around with it

Thank you!
I try some of these softwares and see if one is best for my needs. Actually, I already noticed I should have bought a computer with better CPU !! (trying different settings is fun, but it takes hours to complete) I knew the "deinterlacing" problem, and I thought the "dark video" was something in that kind. Thank you for your explanation, I understand a little better now!

Do you want to improve the video itself or just have better playback colors on your monitor? Many players like VLC have built-in tools to adjust the brightness and other attributes.

Hello,
That's true, I forgot that VLC had a built-in option to improve brightness, contrast an so on... However, if I can get a good result, I prefer to re-encode the movie. I played around and here is some results. The first column is the original picture. All the others are a mix of lower gamma and increased contrast. Column 2 has more red. Column 3 has even more red and less blue Column 4 has a little more red (like col 2) and less blue Column 5 is just lower gamma and increased contrast (RGB at same level) Hard to find which is the best, so if you want to give an advice, you are welcome ! If you want an honest opion, you have got to give TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 6 a go.
It is not easy, but its a case of try and see, filters are there and has a helpfull help tag. But all films and even segments of the film are maybe bits of other films, so the filter you apply for one bit does not suite the rest. There is a free trial, but check your puters specs. Horses for courses and I use the lot....lol. |

Later versions of Photoshop have video correcting tools. You can adjust light, darkness, color and saturation globally for the whole film. It's basically the same adjustments one can do on a jpg.
