Default AAC Advanced Audio Coding

Hi,

I started making my own video clips about a year ago, mostily using FFmpeg. I've found that MP3 support (via libmp3lame) can be dodgy, so I've mostly stuck with coding audio as MP2.

I'm thinking of switching to AAC. I've only done one test so far, to see if it worked and if MPlayer could play it.

I don't use Windows alot, I have an old WinME computer that I use to test my files on, but that's it.

Does anyone know if AAC is widely used? I'd hate to start using it and get alot of complaints from Windows users who can't play my files (which I got a few of with my first clips).

I'll have to check, but I'm nearly certain that's an apple format, i.e used in itunes. I don't think windows media player supports it, but I never use it. I use itunes on my pc with windows 7.

I just tried encoding a clip using AAC,played fine in WMP,which I seldom use.Gspot didn't recognise it,but I can't see any problems.

I use it...mostly with Fairusewizard for encoding films.
AAC + x264 in mp4 or mkv container is the right way to go.

Yes, my ideal would be h.264 + AAC, but unfortunately the version of FFMpeg I'm using hasn't been compiled with -enable x264.

True if your target audience is technogeeks. For the general public, this is the last thing you want to do. Matroska is a huge hassle for the average person. Not ready for prime time.
