Can I correct you a little Rupert? No Russian service allows homos, trannies or whatever to publicly advertize their inclinations

They can do what they want in private, but not in public. So it's NOT a case of ALL military force worldwide. It's just a case of you depraved westerners and your declining morals

Oh, I don't know, I was kinda' hoping that the Navy SEALS who toasted Bin Laden had at least one member who was gay and another who had some 'frothy' underwear under his fatigues. And that loser-piece of shit knew that just before the first bullet went through his skull.

Trannies are all the rage here and getting lots of ink. Never mind that they only constitute 0.3% of the population. My god, we can be such a silly country sometimes.

Russian politicians do not have to worry about pc. If they get bad press it doesnt really matter and the journalist who keeps giving bad press, well he, she or it, can just conveniently disappear!

I spent a two week exercise with one of the first people in the Army to change sex. He was living as a woman and undergoing hormone therapy. Because we were both smokers we met a lot at the smoking point and had several conversations about his journey.

He wasn't a pervert or even gay, he was just someone who was convinced that he was really a she. What he was doing took an awful lot of courage (The Army is not the most socially enlightened of places) and caused him a good deal of mental pain. But such was his conviction he carried on. He became an advisor to the Chief of The General Staff, on transgender issues and eventually had a sex change operation that proved very painful, both physically and mentally. Oh and he paid for it himself, no charge to the taxpayer.

He convinced me that there are serious people who genuinely feel that they are in the wrong body and that there is nothing wrong with these people. We should give them help and support rather than scorn and hilarity.

He now she, left the Army during the last round of redundancies and I for one was proud to have met him and be given an insight into the hell that these people can go through both by being the way the are and then by trying to put it right.

If you really think unwanted homosexual advances are common in the U.S. military, you don't know us very well. Women in our military are subject to sexual harassment, but the men pretty quickly learn that at least half the women are dykes. Which only means that women get hit on by both sexes. My ex-convict buddies assure me that the prevalence of homosexual activity in our prisons is greatly exaggerated, too.

My impression is that Russian society is also rather puritanical. The Communists never succeeded in rooting out the underlying Orthodox Christian belief. The culture seems to have a strong current of male chauvinism. That and the widespread approval that anti-homosexual laws enjoy would lead one to question reports of tolerance for homosexual behavior and male prostitution in the Russian military.

I have noticed a uniquely American phenomenon of calling towns or cities "Something Capital of the World", for example if there is a big light bulb factory in a town they'll put up a huge sign saying "Light Bulb Capital of the World".

I have always wondered if people take this seriously, or is it seen as a bit of a joke?

There was a show on the History Channel a while ago where five or six academics were gathered to discuss different ways human society could end. One of the guys discussed that very idea.

In computing, scientists believe a time will come when computers will actually "wake up and become sentient". What will happen to us (and everything else) when that happens? This guys thought was (depending on the computers programming and its reaction to that programming) that the computers will probably view life as inefficient and a threat to the computers survival.

Very "Terminator" like. Heaven help us if that ever actually happens but, if the guys correct (and I think it is), this will happen fairly soon (probably no more than 20 to 30 years).
This is a really big topic right now, as AI, which has been around almost as long as computers but never really got anywhere, is now becoming mainstream. All we can really say about how science and technology (or anything else) will pan out is that it is completely unpredictable. In the 60s, the heyday of the Space Race, the "future" was space travel, flying cars etc. The idea that billions of people would by now have more computing power than NASA had back then would have seemed absurd, as would the idea that half a century after the moon landing the USA would not have the capability to put a human in space.

Basically, if you want to know what will happen in the future, you'll have to wait and see.
