The England captain has no veto over who is in the squad. Certainly, his views are taken into account, but in the end, the squad is picked by the selectors. Once on tour, then the captain is part of the selection process, along with the coach, but from the squad provided.

If it was only down to who you know, Plunkett and Rashid would be playing - they are teammates of Joe's at Yorkshire...

His views definitely taken into account.

I obviously know they all play for Yorks. I just wonder if the 2 might, for this reason, know about his foibles and stories about him. He might think that they could undermine his authority in the dressing room.

Just consider each player:

Plunkett, apart from Mark Wood, who is injured, the fastest bowler in England. In the past few years he has been one of the best players, with his batting and fielding also being useful.Just remember, historically in Aust it is fast bowlers who take wickets not so much swing bowlers.

Rashid performed exceptionally well last time he was in Aust in the big bash...he got a lot of experience playing on Aust wickets. England keep trying out all these young spinners hoping for a miracle.

I think you're reading far too much into it. The reason they were both left out is, quite simply, recent performance. Plunkett only played 2 red ball games for Yorkshire last season, and was ineffective in both. He wasn't always available due to England white ball duty, but was often not selected when he was. Rashid had probably the poorest season of his career - erratic, inconsistent bowling and hardly scored a run. Neither deserved selection. As for foibles and stories, nothing to see. Joe Root is as straightforward and down to earth as they come.

Adil Rashid has not as yet performed well enough when selected for England. He needs to perform well at County level and press his claim for another chance to be selected.

Liam Plunkett is in the same boat as Adil Rashid, except that we have seen at England level what he can do and his potential is not in question. On the other hand, he is 32 years old and not in form. His window of opportunity may already have closed and even if it has not, he will not feature again until next summer and that will partly depend on injuries excluding other players. There are no second prizes in professional sport, you are either in or out, and at present he is out. But all that is subject to anything else going wrong with the fitness of the England squad, which frankly I do not rule out.

Ben Stokes: stay away from bloody nightclubs, man. As Ian Botham could tell you, they are full of envious and nasty little people who at best will ruin your good time, and at worse will actively and deliberately get you into trouble with the police when all you were trying to do was mind your own business.

I was just thinking that after the shambles last time in Oz, the England team needs a bit of experience and maturity to get thru the tough times.
I don't see that in the bowlers:
Mason Crane, 0 tests
Craig Overton, 0 tests
Tom Curran 0 tests
Jake Ball 3 tests 2 wkts Ave 130
In addition, although Anderson has been a great bowler he is now 35 and can he bowl for long sessions in the searing heat. In the last ashes in Aust he took 14 wkts in 5 tests at an ave of 44.

Just hope i'm wrong.

Congrats to the England ladies for a wonderful result today. Set 179 to win in the T20 they recovered from 30 odd for 3 to win with a over to spare.

The result meant a drawn Ashes series - nice arrangement that but would hardly see the men try that one. No mean achievement in what has been an excellent year for the ladies.

Now can the men go one better ?

How can one not be excited by an Ashes contest, my only concern is Jake Ball, injury wise.

Ideally Aussie's win the toss, we bowl them out before lunch and are 200-0 at the close.

Nothing like three shredded wheat for breakfast.
