Default Margaret Vinci Heldt, creator of beehive hairdo, dies at 98

If there’s any truth to “The higher the hair, the closer to God,” then Margaret Vinci Heldt was a high priestess.

Without Mrs. Heldt — the Chicago beautician who invented the beehive hairdo in 1960 — Marge Simpson would be a lot shorter. Not to mention the B-52s, Brigitte Bardot and the Ronettes.

Ratted, sprayed and shellacked, able to jump half a foot in height in a single salon appointment, her conical creation meant that Chicago, for a time, stole away the title John Waters gave to Baltimore: “Hairdo Capitol of the World.”

Mrs. Heldt, 98, died Friday at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

“I have love in my heart for hairdressers,” she told the Sun-Times in 2002. “I was privileged to give something to our profession that became a classic.”

But, she said, “I don’t know how we could have done it without hairspray.”

Fifty-six years after she birthed the beehive, it’s a hardy perennial on red carpets and world stages. Amy Winehouse was one of its foremost practitioners. Adele and the queen of the “Beyhive” herself — Beyonce — have also sported the style.

The Chicago History Museum recognized her with an exhibit featuring her history-making mannequin head, styled with the altitudinous ‘do.

Mrs. Heldt was known around the world for her creation, said a protegee, Mario Tricoci, founder of Mario Tricoci hair salons and Mario Tricoci University. “Not only was she a Chicago icon,” he said, “she certainly had a large influence on young hairdressers since 1956. She was a master hairdresser at the Midwest Beauty Show. . . .. lending her knowledge to anyone that wanted to be inspired.”

A 1938 graduate of Columbia Beauty School, she won a 1954 National Hairdresser of the Year Competition, as well as many styling contests in Europe, said her daughter, Carlene Ziegler. She established Margaret Vinci Coiffures at 30 N. Michigan Ave., operating it in the 1950s and 1960s.

Margaret Vinci Heldt teased out this missile-shaped beehive for Modern Beauty Shop magazine in 1960.

Modern Beauty Shop magazine — now Modern Salon — approached Mrs. Heldt and asked her to develop something fresh and exciting. Inspired by the shape of a favorite fez hat with some bumblebee decorations, she developed the beehive. “And just like that,” according to the history museum’s blog, “a style icon was born right here in Chicago.”

“It was an instant hit,” Heldt said in a 2011 interview with the Toronto Star. “It made women feel taller and more elegant, refined and glamorous.”

“I had no idea back then it would still be around,” she told the Sun-Times in 1991. “This is so much fun.”

Huddersfield Giants academy player Ronan Costello has died at the age of 17 after being injured in a game against Salford on Saturday. He was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary after the incident during an under-19s match. The teenager had never featured for the first team. "We are absolutely devastated to lose Ronan so tragically and suddenly. He was a loving and caring 17-year-old lad," the family said in a statement. "He was dedicated to his family and friends and was a credit to all of his family. We are so proud of him and his achievements. "We are all truly heartbroken and Ronan will be missed and forever in our hearts." Rugby Football League (RFL) chief executive Nigel Wood said: "We are all incredibly saddened by news of the death of Huddersfield Giants academy player Ronan Costello. "It is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with Ronan's family and friends at this time. "We will work with both clubs involved in the game to ensure that the players, their families and friends are fully supported by the RFL Benevolent Fund and through Sporting Chance." The Giants said in a statement: "It is with regret that Huddersfield Giants wish to inform everyone of the passing of 17-year-old academy player Ronan Costello today. "The club have been asked by the family to send their thanks for the messages of support they have received to date and have requested that all well-wishers now allow them to grieve and respect their privacy. "The Huddersfield Giants are collating all messages, cards and tweets that they receive to pass to the family at the appropriate time." Salford Red Devils posted this statement on their website: "The players, staff and fans of Salford Red Devils wish to extend their deepest sympathy to the family of Huddersfield Giants academy player Ronan Costello who passed away today after being injured in the under-19s game against us on Saturday. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends and team-mates at this tragic time."

Default Chris Warren of the "D-X band" passes away

Lead singer of the "DX Band" Chris Warren, who was famed for the D-generation X "Break It Down" theme song during the Attitude Era, has died at the age of 49.

Warren also recorded the vocals for Triple H's theme "My Time" and made a number of WWE appearances including his first, singing a screeching version of "America The Beautiful" and The Star-Spangled Banner which drew so much criticism WWE edited out of the home video release and WWE Network archive of the event.

The singer reportedly “passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at the age 49” according to his obituary.

A funeral is scheduled for this weekend in the Long Island area of New York, where Warren was born and also lived.

The obituary reads: “He was employed by Local 638 NYC as a Steam Fitter for many years. Music was his passion. He was very artistic and was a singer for the band Bro-kin.”

Chargers mourn death of Earl Faison

One of the very best defensive linemen that San Diego ever had, he was also a great member of the community. Rest in Peace, Earl...

When Pink Floyd was recording Dark Side of the Moon, Wings was recording in a nearby studio. Various people around the studio were recorded to provide the voices heard during parts of the album. Paul and Linda were recorded, but the only member of Wings to make it on the album was Henry McCullogh with his line of "I don't know, I was really drunk at the time."

On the same day that Mr. Faison passed, fellow AFL vet Curley Johnson died at the age of 80. Johnson was an original Dallas Texan, but spent the majority of his career with the NY Titans/Jets. Johnson was the punter of the 1968 Super Bowl champs.

On June 13, music man Chip Moman died at the age of 79. Moman was the first recording engineer at Stax and recorded the label's first hit, "Gee Whiz" by Carla Thomas. Moman left Stax in 1964 and opened American Sound Studio. At American Sound, Moman recorded the Box Tops, Bobby Womack, Joe Tex, Wilson Pickett, Petula Clark and others. In 1969, Moman produced what has been called the best album he recorded, Elvis Presley's From Elvis in Memphis, which yielded the hit singles "In the Ghetto," "Suspicious Minds" and "Kentucky Rain." Moman was also a hit songwriter as well, writing "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Done Somebody Wrong Song," "Do Right Woman Do Right Man" and "The Dark End of the Street." Moman also produced Willie Nelson's version of "Always on My Mind" and the first album of the country supergroup, the Highwaymen.

RIP the 2 year old boy Lane Graves that was snatched by an alligator at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. It seems they have recovered his body after 2 days. I can't begin to imagine what the family are going through as their dream holiday at the happiest place on earth has turned into a complete nightmare.

Default MP dead after street shooting attack

An MP has died after she was shot and stabbed during an attack in her constituency, police have said. Jo Cox, 41, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was left bleeding on the floor by her attacker. A 77-year-old man also suffered slight injuries. A 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street, Birstall, West Yorkshire Police said. The MP holds a weekly advice surgery nearby. The MP's death was confirmed at police headquarters in Wakefield. Live updates on this story 'People screaming' Cafe owner Clarke Rothwell, who witnessed the attack, said he heard a "loud popping noise that sounded like a balloon burst - a loud balloon".
"When I looked round there's a man stood there in his 50s with a white baseball cap on and a jacket with a gun, an old fashioned looking gun in his hand," he said. "He shot this lady once and then he shot her again, he fell to the floor, leant over shot her once more in the face area. "Somebody tried to grab him, wrestling with him and then he wielded a knife, like a hunting knife, just started lunging at her with a knife half a dozen times. People were screaming and running from the area". Eyewitness Hithem Ben Abdallah, said the 41-year-old mother of two was left lying and bleeding on the pavement after the incident. 'Handmade weapon' Mr Abdallah, 56, was in a cafe next door to the library shortly after 13:00 BST when he heard screaming and went outside. "There was a guy who was being very brave and another guy with a white baseball cap who he was trying to control and the man in the baseball cap suddenly pulled a gun from his bag". After a brief scuffle, he said the man stepped back and the MP became involved. Mr Abdallah said the weapon had "looked handmade" and a man who had been wrestling with the gunman continued even after seeing the gun. He said: "The man stepped back with the gun and fired it and then he fired a second shot, as he was firing he was looking down at the ground." "He was kicking her as she was lying on the floor", he said.
Her husband, Brendan, has since tweeted a picture of his wife standing by the side of the River Thames in London. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, wrote he was "utterly shocked by the news of the attack" and the thoughts of the "whole Labour Party" were with Ms Cox. David Cameron also tweeted to express his concern. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jo and her family," he wrote.
