I remember reading Carlos Casteneda. I gave Philosophy a miss after that.

Okay, I did read "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance" but I was somewhat high at the time ..........

I read "War and peace" when I was eleven years old, no wonder I started to smoke strange things.

So folks, which came first, the Chicken or the Egg?

My grandfather did not have much formal education, but was a very wise man. I wish that I had paid more attention to his aphorism "Never argue with a fool. People watching might not be able to tell the difference."

My maternal grandmother also had pearls of wisdom even though she did not originate them. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." and my favorite "We are too soon old and too late smart."

My Dad was fond of paraphrasing Polonius' advice from Hamlet "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

A philosopher is every thinking man. Philosophy may be an academic discipline today but it still means love of wisdom. Man is the product of organized matter that has become self-aware over the course of millions of years. A few thousand years ago his intellectual abilities have reached a point when he began to think about the surrounding world, trying to find his place in the vast unknown. There are many predating philosophical traditions in the Ancient Near East but the Greek were the first to lift philosophy to the level of science. Unlike the ancient Egyptians, Sumerians, Babylonians or Indians, the Greek drew consequences that concerned their worldview. Old belief systems and social orders were questioned and sometimes even shattered. The reason why this was possible is the fact that the Greek had no priestly caste who controlled knowledge only for one purpose: to uphold the existing religious dogmas and system of rule. For example, astronomy was subordinated to astrology. That changed with the Greek.

Chickens evolved from Dinosaurs, and Dinosaurs laid eggs before they evolved into chickens, so the Egg came before the Chicken.
