That's really sad.
I loved him on C4's Football Italia. An endless fount of jokes about Ray Wilkins' (God rest his soul) slaphead and someone who clearly studied the Italian game in order to do his job properly. Intelligent, funny and professional - the voice of Jimmy Greaves' on Spitting Image - and also economical in his verbiage. Drury, Pearce, Green, Tildsley - take note! If you're a fan of sports of any kind then you'll appreciate that there are countless vainglorious popinjays who pour verbal diarrhoea over a match and sigh with relief when a commentator who actually puts the game before his bluster is in charge. https://www.theguardian.com/football...italia-dies-67 RIP |

RIP Peter Klaassen, age 91. Like the last man I RIP'ed - the guy who fought ME-262s over the skies of Europe - Mr. Klaassen was pretty much unknown. From his obituary in my town newspaper...
Born in Susteren in the Netherlands, he grew up under Nazi occupation and the postwar hardships. His first job was serving in the Dutch Army in their Indonesia territory. Eventually migrating to the US, Peter became a "carpenter, tinkerer, sudoku player, puzzler extraordinaire, model boat maker, chess player, coach, soccer player, churchgoer and deacon, world traveler, and most importantly, a wonderful father, grandfather and husband. He was vibrant, impatient, opinionated, gregarious, humble, smart, and a God-fearing man." He leaves behind a wife of 64 years, four children, ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren." Dying a few days before him in my region was another quiet, good man. But 73, 74 years ago, his obituary said he was a US Marine medical Corpsman in the Pacific during WWII. He saw horrific carnage. But one morning, on February 23, 1945, he also saw his country's flag being raised on the mountaintop of a small island called Iwo Jima. These men lived hardship and fear, and saw unspeakable horror. But they dealt with it and went onward and upward. So to them I truly say, Rest in Peace You Magnificent Bastards. |
