The one book I've got "on the go" at the moment is Bright Lights, Dark Shadows, by Carl Magnus Palm, a biography of the Swedish pop group Abba. I've only read the first few pages!

I loved it! The best line was, "He can't be a spy! He's on the list for a knighthood!" "In the trade we call that good cover."

Now I'm reading Michael Lewis's "Flash Boys" about computers making all the important decisions on Wall Street. What could possibly go wrong?

The Boy On The Bridge by M R Carey. A post apocalyptic zombie story which is apparently a sequel to The Girl With All The Gifts. Which I am going to read next and also look at the movie.

I ordered this in English a couple of weeks ago because I don't want to miss the authentic vernacular which seems to play an important role in James Ellroy novels. This is not exactly world class literature nor does it have indispensable educational value. But if anything, it's entertaining.

The Big Nowhere is the second of Ellroy's so-called L.A. Quartet. It starts with a brutal murder on New Year's Eve, as 1949 turns to 1950, and takes the reader into the dark alleys of 1950s Los Angeles. Police brutality and corruption, homophobia, labor union struggles in Hollywood, the Red Scare and racism are among the main topics in this novel. The main character is a young deputy called Danny Upshaw who is forced to confront his own demons as the story unfolds.
Started to read this last year but got bored after about 30 pages. I'm giving it another try. So far it's nastier than Ellroy's better known L.A. Confidential. Some of the characters in the latter novel make an appearance in The Big Nowhere as well because both novels are part of the same series. Examples are Dudley Smith or Turner "Buzz" Meeks.
