Bobby Doerr dies at 99, second baseman for and 'silent captain' of Boston Red Sox in 1940s

Bobby Doerr played for years alongside Boston Red Sox greats Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio, and while Williams was the era’s dominant hitter and Pesky and DiMaggio captured the hearts of Boston’s fans, the steady, genial Doerr was the glue that held the 1940s team together as it revived long-buried dreams of baseball glory at Fenway Park.
Described by Williams, his Red Sox teammate and close friend, as the team's "silent captain," Doerr played 14 seasons for Boston, beginning in 1937, when he had just turned 19. He was considered one of the best offensive second basemen of his era, driving in 100 or more runs six times in his career.


A nine-time All-Star second baseman for the Red Sox, Doerr, who had been the oldest living member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, died Monday at 99.

“Doerr was easily the most popular player of the Red Sox and possibly the most popular baseball player of his era,” David Halberstam wrote in “Summer of ’49” (1989), an account of a memorable pennant race between the Red Sox and the Yankees. “He was so modest and his disposition so gentle that his colleagues often described him as ‘sweet.’ He was the kind of man other men might have envied had they not liked him so much.”
Remarking on Doerr’s fast hands, the novelist and Red Sox devotee George V. Higgins wrote in “The Progress of the Seasons: Forty Years of Baseball in Our Town” (1989) that Doerr had “the front paws of a polar bear.”
What Higgins found equally noteworthy was Doerr’s standing before the often critical Boston press and fans. “Bobby Doerr cannot recall being hammered by the Boston media or being insulted by the fans,” he wrote. “Reasonable enough, because he was perceived as a workman who always gave his very best.”

In the new issue of german "Metal Hammer", i read that Martin Erich Stricker, known as Martin Eric Ain, the base player of "Celtic Frost" passed away on Oct 20 2017. Rest in Peace, one of my influences to be a Metalhead.
