I don't think the ref was going to do anything, it was once the lino gave an opinion that out came the red card.

Nani tackle was borderline yellow/red card. The ref, having done absolutely the right thing in liaising with the linesman, decided on red.

So be it, deal with it, get over it.

I disagree with Mourinho - both teams were pretty much equal tonight, so the right result would have been a draw, probably 2-2, which would still have seen Man U dumped out.

Biggest game of the season, and Rooney left on the bench, Wellbeck starts alongside RVP. The beginning of the end of Rooney at United I fear.

Rooney had an amazing three months at OT before he was brought back too early for a CL game (against Bayern?) in the season before the last WC. Since then he's struggled for consistency and it doesn't help knowing or rather not knowing what his best position might be. He didn't set the world on fire when he came on tonight.

I thought Giggs was class in everything he did, he rolled back the years tonight and played really well, as did both keepers, and Carrick's playing as well as I can remember. But as a neutral I don't think MU really showed the cutting edge they were going to need to beat Madrid. I was disappointed with Nani in the first half and wondered why he got the nod? Wellbeck looked good but partly because he was the only MU player committing Madrid defenders. The decision to send Nani off was preposterous and ruined what promised to be a great contest.

As far as Madrid go, some of their early interplay was fantastic - great one touch pass and move with the wonderful Oezil at the hub of everything then Kaka comes on and the balance went? Ronaldo still has to hack and slash at everything though - he might arguably be at least as talented as Messi but I'd take the little Argentinian every time. Credit to CR for his muted goal celebration - he looked at the end of the game like a man with a decision on his mind.

Borderline yellow/red?? nani never took his eyes off the ball, where was the intent there????, doesnt matter who you support but that was a shocking decision.

When you lose, you have to deal with it and get over it.

To be winning and looking comfortable, then have a decision like that given against you and end up losing is very hard to take.

To be a red card, intent to cause injury is not required, according to the laws of the game. All that's needed is for the play to endanger someone, and Nani did endanger whoever was going to be challenging for the ball.

It was all down to how the ref & linesman judged it in real time in a split second. Having seen it from a number of angles in real time, I can certainly understand how they could reach the judgement they did, although I could also have understood it if they'd decided on just a yellow.



Gareth Bale was at OT for the match - in the posh seats apparently. It would be interesting to know which team he was supporting.

But I've got to say,
Mauriccio Taricho, set off for tackle 2 yards outside the box and a penalty.
Pedro Mendes, 4 yards over the line, NO GOAL.
Gomez clean tackle at 2-0 up, penalty.
Nani picks the ball up then waved play on, think we were winning then.

I can't really sympathize?

We even got a rough decision in the Bernabau, Crouch sent off.

Chelski got ALL the decisions LAST year and i was ridiculed for shouting 'Conspiracy' the old cliche 'It all evens itself out'

I'm afraid the 'worst' sight of the night was Ferdinand at the end applauding the referee right in his face.

I watch him coercing the referee 'everytime' we play Man U.

And i did honestly want United to win the Cup

A bicycle kick is a legitimate move in football. Crouch fugged it up because he's a gangly twonk.

Nani had his studs showing at neck height and those studs made contact with an opposition player. Having your studs showing in a challenge at any height is a clear risk of getting a straight red card. The higher the foot, the greater the risk.

Nani was unfortunate to get a straight red card for the challenge, but it's not a refereeing howler by any stretch of the imagination.
