Before the internet, it was just top shelf newsagent stuff for me or, if I wanted anything stronger, a trip to Soho. I worked for a company from the late 1980s onwards (no names mentioned) where the borrowing and lending of porn tapes amongst the workforce was pretty widespread (once you had wormed your way in) and a borrowed VHS could be copied if you (or in my case, my brother) had two machines hooked up to each other. This company also had a fishing club which went to Denmark every year and their mini-bus was never stopped at customs on the way back. Needless to say, some of the members usually came back with a few mags or tapes hidden amongst their tackle.

Like many others, it was magazines like Penthouse, Mayfair, Razzle, Escort, Parade, etc. I started by buying The Sun and The Daily Star when I wasn't able to buy porno mags. Once I was, I didn't buy news papers as much apart from The Daily Sport, which featured plenty of girls and pushed to be as rude as a newspaper could be. I would also make frequent trips to various second hand shops which stocked older mags. and also some videos, which was something of a luxury before the internet.

Before internet...
When I was about 5 I've seen some nude magazines - at my paternal grandparent's house. I don't know how they belonged too - but my realatives knew that I looked on them. When I went on the beach, I was peeping for girls and women who made topless beach. When private television camed in Bucharest *, I started to watch erotic movies on television (I think it was around year 1994 or 1995). Adult Chanel camed only in the late '90's. Some of the private station broadcasted "Playboy" movies (Tele 7ABC, which was a good station, but now is gone), and "Penthouse" (Antena 1, a station that is a junk now). But I couldn't buy erotic magazines - I dind't have the courage to do it. Well, selling erotic/pornographic magazines to people under 18 is illegal in Romania, but of course, not all people respect these rules. **. But when I had the chance to see erotic magazines or images, I peepe on them. There was an erotic and crime magazine in the '90's, called "Infractoarea/The (She) Criminal (The Female Criminal)". I don't think there where any Romanian pornographic magazines in the '90's; probably only forgein ones; "Hustler" made the 1st pornographic magazine in Romania, but I think it was about year 2000. Oh, when I was in 7th or 8th grade (around year 1996-1997) an mate camed with an "Galeria" magazine (now defunct). There where some newspapers and magazines there wheren't adult, but contained nude images. One of them is the long standing "Magazinul/The shop (the store)" - i bought one a few numbers. And it was also the teen magazine called "Liceenii/The high school students" that contained nude images - this was a good teen magazine, so I dind't buy it for the images. * the 1st private station in Bucharest was in year 1992. But dindn't last too long. The 2nd was in November of 1993 and the 3rd in 1994. I don't know when they started to broadcast erotic movies, but I think is was in 1994 (don't have too many tv magazines from back then). The Satruday night was the night for such movies, but in the earlay days I've seen one during Monday - Friday nights. I don't want to be wrong, but it's possible that Televiziunea Română (Romanian (State) Television) brodcasted erotic movies in the early '90's - I have to ask that on a Romanian forum. They had a midnight show (didn't know about it at the time) in 1990 where they took interwies to nudist too. ** since around 1999-2000 it's illegal to sell alchool and tobacco to people under 18, but who respects this law? Few. Some people are doin' it for money, some people becuase parents send theyr kids to buy alchool and tobacco (well, if you look to young, you have the chances not to be served). My opinion of selling alchool to people under 18 is not the subject of this topic.

There used to be a little newsagent near my house, I'd park my bike outside and linger until no-one else was around, dive in and buy whatever cover looked good on the top shelf (mostly Sullivan's stuff). Sadly that came to an end when I discovered the owner was the gran of a girl I was at a school with at the time. After that had to venture further afield, many a corner shop was browsed but few were found that stocked what I was looking for, occasional trips to the Barras but the stalls there were always mobbed and you often got the piss taken out of you when buying.
There was a short lived shoplifting syndicate at school, would raid the local Menzies for Mayfair or Playboy but if memory serves that died when one of the ringleader's mothers caught him. For the harder stuff we had a couple of fields nearby that the porn fairy left some complete mags in. I'd dearly love to see some of those show up in the forums just for the nostalgia Nerve wracking at times but happy days |

In my early years (1950s) you went to the barbers shop to read Parade. Even as an 11 year old it was acceptable at the barbers. Then there were the wonderful "Tit Bits" and "Reveille". Does anyone else remember Reveille? I once had a copy with one of the most stupendous picture of Alexandra Bastedo (The Champions?) doing a twirl with her skirt and petti out horizontal and her knickers, suspenders and stockings in clear view. Oh, I wish I still had that picture!
At about age 12 I discovered my older brother's copy of Beautiful Britons hidden between two books. This featured a set of those great pictures of a gal in unfortunate circumstances on a sled. She looked so like a woman who lived just across the road that I could get a stiffy either by looking at the BB mag or by looking out the window at the right time. Beautiful Britons, Spick & Span, Spick (on its own) and Span (on its own) became standard fare. In my late teens / early twenties, when I lived away from home, I had a fabulous collection of them. Sadly, they all got scrapped - in the mistaken belief that I'd always be able to get more. That's when the gynacological era started. Now I love a good looking c**t as well as the next man but I think something important passed when the gals started to get their knickers off so fast - maybe not even starting with them. There was a brief repreieve when New Talent was launched but that soon traded the seductive and coy for the full frontal spread. Ah! If I could have my youth over again, I'd spend even more time pumping the old cucumber and I'd create a time capsule containing guess what? |

I treated buying mags as a military op. No wasting time, just go for the kill, scoop mags pay and leave. Talk about an adrenalin rush.

It was a different world before the net....things have really changed....some for the worse.
Back then if you were into swinging etc. or have a certain 'weird' fetish, it was hard. Alot of leg work etc. what I miss most are the oldschool porn shops - poor lighting, dirty floors ( sic ) and just the feeling of being happy with follow perverts - there a bond - which doesn't happen much now. |

Thank you LoinRanger, I know just what you mean. Does anyone remember the Janus bookshop in London years ago? And the booths at the back showing spanking films?
