Getting rid of pop-unders in Firefox
With so many image sites and file sites causing pop-unders these days (like livejasmin and zedo, etc), I thought I'd give my solution for dealing with them. There are many tools to help with pop-ups, but many don't seem to work too well with Pop-unders. Yes, one can disable javascript most of it will go away, but that can be just as much of a pain turning it on and off.
The tool I use is Redirector for Firefox. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...on/redirector/ Once installed, wait for a pop-under (or pesky pop-up) to appear. If you cannot see the website URL for the pop-under, right-click on a blank part of the screen and click "Page Info." You can also click CTRL+I or goto Tools > Page Info. This will show you the URL of the site. Highlight and copy just the site name (no www. or .com). So if the site is www.popup.com, just copy the word popup. Open Redirector (Tools Menu > Addons > double-click Redirector). If you have your bottom status bar viewable, there should be an "R" icon you can right-click as well (left-clicking turns it on and off). Click "ADD" Under "Include Pattern" paste the name you copied from the page info window. Next add asterisks (*) at both ends of the word(s). e.g. *popup* In the line that says "Redirect to" copy and paste the following: Code:
javascript:window.close(); Here's what it should look like: If you set it up properly, any future windows from the site you entered should automatically close. Sadly it doesn't prevent them, but they close automatically and you don't end up with a whole bunch of open windows at the end of a large amount of clicking. |

Thanks. That seems to have zapped the annoying livej@smin adverts which got past my AdBlockPlus add-on.

another solution, and highly recommended if you are browsing with firefox:
http://noscript.net/ some self-explaining screens: http://noscript.net/screenshots install the noscript plugin with the recommended settings (dialog will tell you about). later you only have to enable trustful scripts and pages like VEF to browse them smoothly. noscript also handles inline-framed advertising and usertracking as it handles popups/popunders and all the shit people do with javascript (i love javascript but i hate the folks who misuse it for their business).

Just a note: Redirector does not work in Firefox 4. Not sure if the author is planning an update.

Redirector is now available for Firefox 4.0. Edit: oops it's the January 2011 version which is certified for FF 4.0 Betas only. For some reason it's re-enabled itself - seems to work though.

I'll derfinitely have to try this.
LiveJasmin is a real pain in the arse and I wonder that anyone would give those twats the time of day. Thanks for the heads-up.

Same here. I just installed Redirector a couple weeks ago to FF 3.6.x and it worked just like promised. When FF 4.0 rolled out and I installed it, Redirector stopped working for a couple of days, but seems to have somehow picked up automatically and now works like a charm again.

HostsMan is a small free portable app that knocks out a lot of junk via the hosts file...for LiveJasmin it doesn't prevent the popup window from appearing but it blanks it out with a "can not connect" type of notice....
