When Sharon Mitchell was directing, one time at a morning shoot, a guy couldn't rise to the occasion, and Mitchell took him off to the side (but still in pretty good view of everyone), fluffed the guy, and then he went on to do the scene. I saw that with my own two eyes, and I didn't even work there, I was just visiting my friend Scott who did gaffer work. This was in the early '90's.

I used to work in the industry from time to time (as a cameraman) back in the 70's and I never saw it. Never saw or got invited to any orgies either. It wasn't like Boogie Nights. It was just a business and the girls could turn it off and on like a tap just as convincingly as the guys.
I'd never go back to it either. Fantasy porn is one thing, but the real mccoy is a really nasty, soul destroying business. There's a reason why so many of 'em OD.

Jenna Jameson mentioned in her book that her then husband Brad Armstrong was notorious for never getting fully erect for anyone that wasn't Asian. (True story.) Jenna would clear the set and take care of him herself, such was the level of power she had at Wicked where she could shut down an entire set, (and at this point all of her movies had 6 figure budgets,) to basically play the role of fluffer to the male of her choice.

Though she wasn't technically a fluffer, for a shoot I was cameraman on some years ago, the guy's girlfriend, not actually appearing in the video, spent quite a while on her knees getting/keeping him hard when necessary.

As far as listing their job on a resume:

"Stagehand" isn't quite accurate.

"Stagemouth" is closer, but doesn't really sound right.

"Production Assistant" would seem to be pretty accurate.

"Personal trainer"? "Handler"? How about "grip"? "Oral advisor"? "Tongue depressor"? "Mom"? (Ok, that was nasty). "Hardener"? "Kneepad girl"? "Talent agent"? "Set erector"? "Spiritual advisor"? "Equipment manager"? Ok, I could do this all day.

A while back I watched a program about British porn maker Phil Barry. He was shooting a scene and there was a fluffer keeping the guys hard, she was Laura Michaels who is now a British porn star.

there was a clip posted here of a fluffer in action
i believe it was 'rocco invades russia' or something similar and the scene in question involved a young french woodsman whos name i cant recall performing with a young redhead who was upset with the ways things were going. so during the interval an older and dressed lady was brought in to keep the actor hard
