Default VLC won't play MPGs

VLC will not play MPGs on my Mac. The behavior is fairly consistent: the title is displayed and usually the running time, but no video.

QuickTime, on the other hand, always plays these MPGs.

Does anyone know what's wrong with VLC?

Thanks

Here's a recent post of an MPG for reference: vintage-erotica-forum.com/showpost.php?p=4751564&postcount=1122

Just tried mpg in VLC 2.0.10 on a mac - works fine.

Just tried your ref file: correct - it does not work. You can:
find alternative format file or convert it yourself.
I would convert the file via hiandbrake. Hope this helps.

Yes, I should have mentioned that other formats work. AFAIK only MPGs are broken, a situation that has been true for a while. I just got fed up enough to post about it.

Handbrake is not a 100% solution based on my experience. For some MPGs it produces MKVs and MP4s that are deficient.

You could also try re-installing VLC - sometimes a clean install is the fix.

Some downloaded MP4s are defective -- I've noticed this problem with Usenet postings and torrents.

Sometimes they're just junk that content owners put up as decoys; giant files to suck up sharing/piracy bandwidth.

If you look at torrent and usenet comments at indexers, you'll often see user ratings for some of these, indicating that they're garbage.

I just tried this mpeg in SMplayer and it played fine. SMplayer is apparently more forgiving than VLC.
However, I remuxed the video in Avidemux and the resulting file plays in VLC too.

Avidemux worked for me too. I will use it to convert these MPGs while waiting for VLC to get fixed, which may never happen.

Thanks for the solution!

There is no need to convert the mpg files when they don't play in VLC. All you need to do is remux (remultiplex) them. This is faster and retains the original quality.
