Seattle is not totally hopeless. They have a revolutionary program that houses chronic drunks in something like a single room residence hotel and provides them with 2 or 3 cans of beer per day to keep the DTs away. It turns out that this is much cheaper than paying for all the emergency medical care and court and policing costs to leave these drunks free ranging on the street.

The fly in the ointment is that those who remain on the street are often the hardcore mentally ill who refuse to take medication, are deeply suspicious of all who try to help them, and a pose a constant threat of violent assaults. If we are not going to institutionalize such folks shouldn't we think of gently euthanizing them?

Starbucks is in the news again...

You may recall the uproar a couple of weeks back when there was an issue surrounding 2 black males who wanted to use the restroom and hadn't bought anything. Probably a misunderstanding, but why waste an opportunity to scream racism knowing that any effort to defend it would only fan the flames of righteous indignation.

Last week, Starbucks was in the middle of another 'racist' controversy: A barista wrote the word "Beaner" on a cup that eventually found itself in the hands of a Mexican. His name was Peter, and although he didn't speak English, via a translator, his outrage was made clear. The next stampede in the name of racism was on.

Now.. I don't drink coffee, but I have been in Starbucks. It's noisy. I suppose there's no chance that 'Peter' was mistaken for 'beaner'.. accents and all... or that the barista could have thought it was his nickname... the guy understands no English yet somehow knew he should be offended? Something smells here. Absolutely no effort was made by anyone to investigate. Again, it's not the nature of the evidence but the seriousness of the charge.

Anyway, in the aftermath, Starbucks has mandated that all employees go through sensitivity training and that everyone is now a "customer", regardless of whether or not they buy anything. Their restrooms are now open to anyone.

Good luck with that.

I must say I think Starbucks underestimated itself. On my way to work every morning, I pass at least 5 different Starbucks. At no time during this all this "controversy" did I pass any of them when they didn't have a line for the drive-thru that stretched all around the building.

I guess people gotta have their coffee, regardless.

File this one under: She just won't go away--

Yes.. I could only be talking about Hillary. Harvard University is now going to award her the Radcliffe Medal, which the university says honors individuals whose life and work have had a "transformative impact on society."

Organizers say Clinton was chosen because she's a champion for human rights, a skilled legislator and an advocate of American leadership on the world stage.

Obvious retorts aside, I'm still trying to think of ANY legislation she authored. But yes, she has transformed something: her net worth from dead broke to millionaire... regardless of the source.

This reminds me of when they gave Arafat the Nobel Peace Prize.

No idea if this correct or not, but I think I vaguely remember reading something about Hilary helping to bring about the fence between Mexico and the US.

Is this correct?

They may need a full time employee just to swamp out the restrooms in certain locales, then, based on my dim remembrances of certain public facilities in inner cities I saw as a child.

Pay $9.00 for a trendy coffee.

Use the restroom.

Catch hepatitis.

This is not a good business model.
