wife and I got 2 border collies over 8 years ago from a farm in limerick (ireland).
The most intelligent breed of dog, both from the same litter, same food diet care exercise etc but 2 different personalities. One the most loyal and friendly dog ever with people, the other mad as a hatter and will go for anyone that approaches me, so protective, but if you know me the most docile friendly dog imaginable, like jeckyl and hyde. got a german shepard pup then and a week later one of the collies died in his sleep with a heart problem and my wife and I were gutted, almost a year later and I still miss him. As for the german shephard who is now over a year old and weight over 7 stone, he is stark raving mad, after keeping collies he seems thick as pigshit. Scared of cats, ice cream van, and goes ballistic when he dont like something he sees on tv ( which he loves), collies never cared for tv. Has tore the leather couch, destroyed the remote controls, her phone , hair brushes and anything he can his mouth on, no matter how much exercise he gets Here are the 2 collies at around 6 years old the collie at 8 and the GS pup at 9 months |

I would love a dog, but don't know a lot about them. It would need to be a small dog; one I can lift onto my knee. Why? I don't have a lot of space and a St Bernard is heavier than me any help would be nice.
