American Football is very very boring, scoccer is very boring, rugby League bad, rugby union not to bad, but for the ultimate fast, exciting, hard match you carn't beat AFL (aussie rules)

Could never get my head around Aussie Rules, it seemed to be a cross between Rugby and Netball, with violence.

Anyway, I'am off outside to hide behind the pile of empties, just in case any offended aussies are in the vicinity.

I recollect seeing highlights of an Aussie Rules game many years ago (when Channel 4 was newish in the UK and used to broadcast unknown sporting contests). It might have have been Essendon v Hawthorn, but I couldn't swear to that now. But at one point, everyone was fighting openly except one player from each team, who stood at opposite ends of the huge brawl, stared at one another and shrugged as though to say "Damned if I know what it's about..."

There was a post match interview of the opposing captains, who were bizarrely relaxed and friendly, totally confortable in one anothers' company (for all I know they probably went for a beer afterwards). The interviewer advanced the theory that it had been a violent game, and one of the captains replied:

"Violent? Nah. It did get a bit competitive, but that's all..."

Like most people on the planet I prefer football (soccer). It's THE global team sport. Everybody plays it. Although I do like American football, it has limited popularity outside the US with the possible exception of the Superbowl which does achieve a global audience. As for Aussie rules, watched a game once, didn't understand it at all. As far as I'm aware no one plays it outside of Australia. I do like rugby union but as I'm Scottish I have no love for rugby league, we just dont play it here.

Simple.... Get the ball and kick it through your goals... Be as violent as you can without breaking a rule. Above all, win at any cost

I grew up with union (not surprprising for NZ) but have a great appreciation for football (soccer). Over the ast decade though AFL has become a lot more compelling. It is a weird hybrid but simple and athletic. When two teams are locked closely it can be sublime.

Estreeter, there are more similarities between Aussie footy and Brit footy than you think. This is one of the traditional matches from the south, there are also other village matches all over the country

Quote:
Every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, in the English village of Ashbourne, a game takes place which has been an ongoing tradition since the 1300s. The village is split into two halves based on the birthplace of the villager: those born on the north of the river are Up’Ards; those on the south are Down’Ards. The massive crowd gathers in the center of the village and a ball is released. What ensues is the most chaotic and unruly sport in the world. The aim is for one's team to score by ‘goaling’ the ball against one of two millstones on either side of the village. The few rules that exist equate to ‘don’t kill anyone’ and ‘don’t drive away with the ball.’ It has been rumored that the origins of the game lie in the tossing of a severed head into the crowd following an execution. Either way, the game has quite a name for itself in Britain, having received wide coverage in recent years. It also achieved royal status after a visit from the Prince of Wales in the 1920s.

There is also a football game in East Yorkshire between two village teams and 'the pitch' is about 2 or three miles long and wide! with ponds, ditches, sheep, you name it, it's there. The game can go on for hours.
And everyone's usually pissed before the game and after..
