Windows 7 folder sorting options.......
I was wondering if some you kind technophiles, might be able to either
help me with something that bugs the heck out of me while viewing my folders, or at least let me know if I could do something about it or not. Here's the deal. I open a folder, let's say full of pictures. I'm working on a number of those pictures in photoshop for instance, and as I finish one, I close it in the program and save it back to that same folder, replacing the original with the one I'd just edited, before moving on to the next picture that I already have opened in photoshop. Just before I begin to work on the next photo though, I remember something that I wanted to add to the photo I just saved and closed, so go back to my opened folder to find it. Here's the thing......I don't want to HAVE to "find" it. I want it to be first in line, having sorted things in the folder, by "date modified". Wait......let me re-phrase that......I WANT to sort things in that folder by date modified, but.......that option is not available, unless I right click in an open space of that folder, click on the "sort by" option, then the part that really bugs me, have to choose the "more" option, to run the a whole stinkin' list of parameters trying to hunt down "date modified", check it's box, then start all over again before I can be able to actually choose "date modified" as a way to sort everything in that folder. It's a pain in the ass, because after I chose that option to sort by that way, then come back to that folder a day or two later, I have to go thru the whole stinkin routine all over again, because rather than "date modified" being a part of the options, it will have resorted back to only giving me the choice between, "date", "type", "size" and the totally worthless "tags". What I'd like to know is, is there a way, to permanently make "date modified". a part of my folder options, without having to hunt it down each time I am looking for something in my folders? And for that matter, a way to banish that "stinkin" neo "tags" option, to oblivion lol. I figured if anyone would know something about this type of thing, it would be you fellas in here. Thanks! |

when you open a folder there should be an organize option in the menu across the top.
Then go to " folder and search options " You can set it to open again as you left it the last time You should be able to dump the tags option by unticking it

I use ACDSee to do what you describe. I virtually never use explorer windows except for very simple things. Also I never save an image I'm working on except as a bitmap. If you do what you said "work on an image, save it then open again for more work degrades the image every time you save it if it's a jpeg.

I had a problem where I had a folder that was always arranging itself by 'date modified' and I wanted it to be sorted by 'date created'. This required ticking that option using the 'More Details' box. The sort order, along with that column, would disappear, not every time I closed the folder but every other day or so. The strange thing is that now it seems to have stuck (touch wood). This is speculation but possibly something has caused it to be fixed, and you might be able to bring about a similar result with some experimentation.
I keep the folder in the 'Large Icons' view, but I changed it to 'Details' to add the extra column and to sort, then changed it back. Does that help? I also changed the folder's icon using 'Properties>Customize>Change Icon'. Did that do it? On a different note, I looked in my copy of 'Windows 7 Inside Out' (Ed Bott et al) and it said: Quote:

but you know how it can get when some little thing starts to annoy ya. What it does though, is stay the way I changed it, till I close it, but then a few hours later......back to the way it was, with having to search for thru that long list of folder modifications to tick the ones I want to be able to chose from quickly, and do away with the ones I never use. Of course it's not a big deal on folders with just a few things in them, but some folders with hundreds of pictures in it, make it a chore to find the item I'm looking for. |

I change both the "view", and "order" of the folders, by right clicking, then either clicking on view, or sort by before going on to those options. The way I'm reading the quote from your 'Windows 7 Inside Out' book, it's basically telling me that I can certainly change how I see and order things within a folder, but that it'll ultimately resort back to the way the view and order of those folder items originally were displayed. |

use at this point, with hundreds of folders and thousands of images. Not sure exactly how it works, but I'd think that using a program, like that, that everything would have to be RE-organized, to basically match the way I have it already. I have no clue if things actually work like that with ACDSee, but if not, I might just be willing to give it a stab. As far as saving images as Bitmaps as opposed to JPEGS........ By me saying that I may open and close a picture several times before being satisfied with the end results, I mean maybe 5-10 times.......not several hundred times. I can tell no noticeable difference in picture quality so far, but then I'm also saving pictures sometimes that are over 5000 pixels wide, and with a photoshop quality setting maxed out at 12 too. That sure makes sense though, and I'll certainly consider starting to save those larger "template" type of pics that I eventually shrink down a bit before I share them online, to bitmaps, with only the smaller pics to share as jpegs. |
