This is the key bit. If the files are identical to Win system files, then what's happening is probably path related . . . sometimes you'll have a setting which will cause an archive extract to copy all files used into the extract path, that's what it sounds like is happening here.

What prog are you using to unzip/unrar? Try looking at the settings there. Also try unzipping with another program, to see if its dependent on that.

I have malwarebytes and run it regularly. I'll try rkill and adw cleaner.
As far as path related, I found some info regarding that about Win 7, but not about XP. Hmm.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

gmcbee,

This is probably way out in right field but at least worth mentioning. You do know that MS is quitting support for XP in April? I'm wondering if this could be some type of incompatibility between your newer software and the need for Win 7 or 8?

I know this sounds really wacky. I've never run into this problem (or even heard of it) so I find it interesting.

gmcbee...........

have you tried running Malwarebytes in safe mode...? it finds so much more that way, as most of the programs are then shut down and able to be scanned thoroughly....? (press F8 as you boot to go to use safe mode options) For instance, if regular mode would find 8 infections, Safe mode would likely find 208 plus infections...... Had a record today in the shop, found 691 infections using Mwb in Safe Mode...... ;o)

Add to point raised above... MS are also making it a long ass process to update new installations of Win Vista & Win7 too..... again because they want you to buy their lousy Win8 instead....

Hey MS! add this Start Menu patch you keep whittering on about, and we'll consider it..!!

I know they are. I'll buy a new box if I need Win7, but I'll keep my primary machine on XP as long as possible. I like it! As far as software, everything I need runs on XP, I don't really have any "newer" software, and I'm not a gamer.

Yeah, it's a weird thing. I was hoping to find someone out there who had the same problem and could say "oh, yeah, it's X, just do Y."

Edit: Pharoa, I'll try it in safe mode, thanks!

You'll be lucky to even buy a 'new' pc or laptop that isn't already on Win8. I know for a fact that PCWorld and most others large chainstores will only supply Win8 units as new already. MS have the power to force them to do this, so do so.....

PC repair shops like ours can, and frequently do, take in new units, format the hard-drive, and then install Win7 on them for customers who hate Win8, but it then sadly invalidates your warranty; both from supplier and manufacturer.

I know. Damn shame. Everything I've heard about Win 8 is that it's shite.
Hell, I still have 3 pentium 2's, one of them running 95 and two running 98.
I don't know why I keep them around, but even schools and libraries won't take them as donations!
XP is my OS of choice for my laptop and current desktop, though.
